LongTimeLurker
There could still be a move by the Russian Duma to recognize the two breakaway Donbas republics in the works. That would be another step towards another Crimea style annexation. Edited February 15, 2022 by LongTimeLurker

welshbairn
Potential for mischief around Odessa and the Black Sea imo. Quote Russia has been reinforcing its Black Sea Fleet since last week. As Naval News reported on February 08, the first part of a Russian Navy amphibious landing ship force consists of three Ropucha-class amphibious assault ships (Minsk (127), Korolev (130), and Kaliningrad (102)), which can carry troops, tanks, and supplies, has entered the Black Sea. On February 08, three additional amphibious vessels (Project 775 (Ropucha-class) Georgy Pobedonosets (016), Olenegorsky Gornyak (012), and Project 11711 (Ivan Gren-class) Pyotr Morgunov (017)) of the Russian Navy transited the Bosporus tonight to enter the Black Sea. In addition to the current tensions in the region, Russia issued NOTAMs in the Black Sea on February 9, effectively blocking the entrance to the Sea of Azov as well as the ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk. The NOTAMs were released in preparation for the Black Sea Fleet’s live missile and gun firing exercises, which will take place from February 13 to February 19, 2022. https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2022/02/russias-improved-kilo-class-submarine-entering-black-sea/

Bairnardo
Is this the greatest trolling the world has ever seen? Do a massive scale mobilisation, weeks of tension and threats, Europe collectively shiting itself, then the day before Western intelligence insists its all definitely gonna spark up, turn your lads around and give it "jk lololol"

SweeperDee
Don’t Russia usually just destabilise and infilitrate their target nations and until they are essentially free for the taking anyhow? Full-scale mass army cross-border invasions aren’t usually their gig, no?
LongTimeLurker
The buildup was probably mainly about testing western resolve (didn't blink basically) and reminding Kiev that there's more than just the breakaway republic armed forces to be contended with in the Donbas if newly acquired Turkish drones start to be used in a big way. Biggest disappointment from a light entertainment sort of angle is that Oleh Lyashko, the biggest nutter in Ukrainian politics, didn't feature prominently in what has unfolded:

Bairnardo
As false flags go, an attack on a retreating force who were only there for drills anyway is a peach. Played Vlad.

Disappointing, thought it was going to cover the gap the Olympics finishing always creates. Maybe China can invade Taiwan although disappointing for us that most the action would be over night here.
Aladdin
So was putin playing 4d chess whilst we were stuck with checkers? Or was it a classic case of him doing a spot of pavement dancing giving it the whole "hold me back" routine? Most importantly, are the Ukranian national team going to avoid conscription before the end of March?
Have some faith in Magic
All this talk of retreat is nonsense. The Sun are saying it's a 1am kick off so it must be true.
welshbairn
It's been a hell of an expensive way for Putin to feel like he matters on the world stage. Moving half the army to temporary camps around Ukraine for months can't be cheap.
