Russian invasion of Ukraine

Ukraine seem to have better control over soldiers giving away their positions on social media, the same could apply to civilians. I just don't think we're hearing the whole story, no numbers on estimated Ukrainian military casualties for example, but with possibly hyped up ones for Russians.

IDK about that, the Ukrainians are publishing pretty low numbers of casualties, but they aren’t being trumpeted by the press much  because with press and cellphones all over, anyone who loses a relative can easily spread the word and the press hears about it. The numbers the press hears from both sides about are in roughly the same ballpark, so they don’t squeal about it, they just go for the torture chambers news…which is real, the Russians really stepped on it with golf shoes on in this case.

Astonished to find out my big pal Oleg was such a dud for us. Somehow had hero memories of the big Ukrainian. But they still named an aircraft carrier after him? Mind blown….

More likely to be named after this guy.  Seems to be a better fit with current working practice in the Russian armed forces.

Ukraine struck Engels airbase inside Russia again. Reports that one heavy bomber was destroyed and several Russian air force personnel killed. Russia is claiming that it was due to debris from a shot down missile rather than a direct strike.

Engels was hit earlier in the month causing damage to the runway and to several strategic bomber planes.

Russian media reporting three Russian pilots were killed in the attack, a big loss for the Russian Air Force.

Potentially indicates use of good real time intelligence to strike when bombers were either fueled, armed and ready to depart or maybe when returning. Stinking during bombers returning would complicate the air defence role quite a bit. Either way, confirms that Ukraine have people on the ground, deep, inside Russia and also likely are able to communicate with them in real time.

Russian media also reporting the “liquidation” of a Ukrainian infiltration team at the border, armed with improvised explosives and “German sub-machine guns”. Interestingly loaded terms used there.

Interesting article about how the battle of the Donbas in summer had a knock on impact on the subsequent Ukrainian counter offensives and retaking of territory in Kharkiv and Kherson.

Another Russian oligarch tries flying without wings…

A Russian sausage magnate and politician who briefly criticised Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has died after falling from the third-floor window of a luxury hotel in India.

Pavel Antov was a member of Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party and a multi-millionaire, having founded one of Russia’s largest sausage makers.

He was reportedly on a trip to celebrate his upcoming 66th birthday when he was found lying in a pool of blood outside the Hotel Sai International in Rayagada, a district in the southern state of Odisha.

An unnamed police official told India’s NDTV news outlet they suspected he took his own life after becoming depressed about the death of his friend who was found dead in the same hotel.

Vladimir Bidenov was found lying unconscious in his room on the first floor of the hotel on Thursday surrounded by empty wine bottles.

Mr Antov was chairman of the agriculture committee at the legislature in Russia’s Vladimir region and ranked the country’s highest-earning lawmaker by Russian Forbes, with a declared annual income of just under £130 million. He was the founder of Vladimir Standard, a major meat producer.

In July he posted a story on his WhatsApp messaging app, criticising Russia’s missile attacks on Kyiv as “terrorism”.

He was referring to reports of a girl that had been pulled out from rubble after her house had been shelled.

Shortly afterwards, Mr Antov apologised for the post, claiming that the message had been posted by someone else. He said he was “a supporter of the president and my country’s patriot” and “shared the goals” of the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Alexei Idamkin, Russia’s consul-general in Calcutta, told the Tass news agency that there was no foul play in the lawmaker’s death.

A senior police officer was quoted by NDTV as saying Antov was depressed “due to the death of his friend''.

That's gristly.

The India one earlier is a classic of the "nothing to see here guv" type - kill one guy, chuck another off the balcony a few days later and pay the polis commissioner to say that he was probably "sad" about his mate !!

Russian tycoon who criticised Ukraine invasion falls to death from window

A Russian sausage tycoon who reportedly criticised the war in Ukraine has died after falling from the third-floor window of a luxury hotel in India.

The body of Pavel Antov, 65, was discovered on Saturday outside his lodgings in eastern Odisha state, where he was on holiday with three other Russian nationals.

His death came just two days after his friend and another local Russian politician, Vladimir Bidenov, was found dead in the same hotel after an apparent heart attack.

Indian police are investigating Antov’s death, authorities confirmed. They told AFP news agency that so far there was no sign of foul play.

Regional police chief Rajesh Pandit said:

All possible angles as regards to the deaths of two Russian nationals are being verified.

Bidenov’s heart attack had likely been caused by binge drinking and a possible drug overdose, he said.

The police chief added:

So far it seems that Antov accidentally fell from the hotel terrace. He was probably disturbed by the death of his friend and went to the hotel terrace and likely fell to his death from there.
