This is going to be the story to watch. Germans do not f**k about with money.

If the EU make a crazy statement about China tomorrow then pressure will only increase.

They should try having a fucking c**t like Rishi Sunak in charge of the till.

The Tory Party ethos is that people can replace having disposable income with being raging about immigrants/lefties/transwomen/non white folk on TV/Putin/Brexit/Tories.

Pick your poison.

A NATO official has briefed that they assess that Russia has lost between 7,000 - 15,000 troops in the war.

You have to question the validity of any claim that says it might be x or it might be greater than 2x.

Russia accidentally confirmed they had 10k dead a couple days ago then retracted it.

I’m not disputing any figure, just commenting on how broad it is.

I was tempted to say ‘the more the better’ but these Russian soldiers are victims of Putin as much as the poor Ukrainians.

Surely you would be more trusting of a figure which explicitly outlines its uncertainty, rather than someone claiming to know the exact number.

-Mr Putin sir, you know that nice city by the sea you wanted?

-Mariupol?

Well sir, you might not want it any more.

Calgacus got it right 2000 years ago: "They make a desert and call it peace."

Or in this case they might call it denazification, the way they're wont to do.

That’s a valid point.  I agree with it somewhere between 1% and 100%.

Heard an interview on Radio Scotland earlier with a very emotional Sergei Baltacha sr, didn't realise he was from Mariupol.

It's a fair point, the cities he is destroying will cost them billions to rebuild if they are ever conceded in some sort of negotiated settlement.

It's Odessa (at a push) and a land link to Crimea (very likely) they're after. Mariupol has little significance in itself, other than a defensive obstacle to those strategic goals.

If Russia turns Ukraine into a de facto landlocked country then that's a major strategic gain.

Is he not more interested in depriving Ukraine of Mariupol than having it for his own purposes?  Or at least are his purposes not more strategic than anything else?

Had a look at the big steel plant in Mariupol that's been half destroyed.

Quote

Before 2016 the plant was named after Communist leader Vladimir Lenin. On 25 April 2016 due to decommunization laws in Ukraine it was "renamed" in honour of scientist Zot Illich Nekrasov, so it is still called Маріупольський металургійний комбінат імені Ілліча (literally - Mariupol Metallurgical Plant named after Illich). Because of this manipulation, Mariupol citizens started to call it "Plant after not-that-Illich".

As I understand it, the destruction of Mariupol serves little strategic purpose, except to terrorise the population.

Putin seems to want to drive more of the population out to Poland / Western Europe. What he intends to do with the remaining wasteland is anyones guess?
