The difference is that this is the next stage of a long term plan.

It's the same then? MacLean was always meant to succeed Davidson.

Just asking, as even the "revitalised the club/fans bought in/players love him" stuff was what we were saying 12 months ago.

I tend to view things entirely through a St Johnstone lense so it's interesting seeing the similarities.

Similarities?

Not sure if there are many other than ex player then coach stepping in.

Two different situations, two different types of person and two different structures in place to help them.

Not comparable imo.

Ex club legend groomed for future management, brought in earlier than expected, to revitalise squad previous manager called shite. Succeeds thanks to an initial bounce and heads into first ever Summer window needing to sign multiple Premiership ready players as key experienced ones are leaving.

It's nowhere near as simple as that. Macca wasn't given/didn't have the back up or even budget in place to be a success this season. It was a shambles by ALL involved but Macca carried the can and at the end, rightly so. County will have a budget sorted and staff in place so Don can just do his job.

Where do you lads think you'd be now if you kept Kettlewell? Was it the correct decision to punt him?

Such a big County hero doing relatively well after Motherwell and the spate of utter shite you've hired after him, in retrospect do you think it was the right or wrong decision?

Kettlewell had to go. His County teams were a soft touch. I don’t think it was so much to do with his tactical prowess, but rather the players he signed. He tried to play an “attractive brand” to begin with and it worked as we started the season brilliantly, but we were sussed out fairly quickly and John “Yogi” Hughes came in and steadied the ship. If John “Yogi” Hughes is coming in to steady a ship, let’s face it; you’ve made a c**t of your job.

Is there a chance it goes all Steven MacLean for Cowie?

Where you mistake a new manager bounce for the new manager being good, and then they're shafted by trying to rebuild a squad and find high level players in a Summer they've not been able to plan for and it all falls apart?

If Cowie starts the season poorly, he’ll still be given time by Roy. He’s earned enough goodwill at County and it’s hardly one of the more poisonous fan bases when the going gets tough.

FWIW - it’s hardly a quick new manager bounce either. He’s been in charge since the start of February, and in that time picked up 1 less point than Adams and Mackay combined. It’s enough time to make a conscious decision about a managers ability.

Aye but is it not 1PPG.

Caveat that he took over a struggling team, but then he also took over a side with Dhanda and Murray (in the form of his life).

It feels like everything seems better than it is due to what came before, and in isolation it wouldn't be as impressive.

He managed to get tunes out of players that 2 “experienced” managers, who had signed said duds, couldn’t. It wasn’t just a case of Dhanda and Murray dragging County through for the last quarter either - every single player in the team’s performances increase greatly. Thats no coincidence.

MacLean only had six games before the end of the season, making it far easier for perceptions to be warped by a few good results in a new manager bounce. Cowie has had 17, winning six of them. It's a short enough and mixed enough sample that you still can't guarantee he's going to be a good manager in the long term off the back of it, but there's far more to go on than there was with MacLean.

If the point you're trying to make is "It might all go wrong", then of course you're right. Or he might be excellent and move on to bigger and better things. Like every managerial appointment any club has ever made, then.

It's a wait and see from me. Reasons to be hopeful, but that last week of the regular season was a missed chance to avoid the playoff and has been too willingly overlooked in the relief that came with yesterday's result.

I can’t really speak for Maclean but Don has always had belief in himself and he has always had a great work ethic.  He was never the most gifted footballer, but he was a smart footballer, he recognised what he could do well and worked on what he couldn’t.  He maximised his potential through his own self awareness.  Has never been afraid to make difficult choices (the move to Caley) and forged a really good career for himself that gained him 10 Scotland Caps.

All that experience will help him in management, and we can already see that he has maximised the potential out of the likes of Dhanda and Murray.  Murray scored 10 of his 16 league goals under Cowie.

Don is a good guy, worked hard, achieved a lot, maximised his talent, is calm, speaks well and doesn’t have any of the car crash baggage that Malky and Derek had. He’ll be the first Ross County manager that moves to a bigger club to manage.

It's pointless using the games against Raith, IMO. The quality gap on show was too large.

I'm just finding the hype/belief in Cowie surprising. He has 4 wins in 15 in the league, one a win against Rangers that will be a struggle to repeat next season due to the situation Rangers were in. Lost 7 of the 15, and his points average was roughly what County managed this season anyway.

The way he conducts himself.  The way he speaks.  The respect players have for him, and, late goals notwithstanding, the massive improvement in performance by the end of the season.    The gap between County and Raith is no bigger than between County and Partick.  The level of professionalism is like and night and day.

I believe in Cowie because he’s such a good bloke as much as anything.  Can’t really say that about at least one and possibly both of the last two.

I really liked Cowie at Hearts. He was a decent player with a great attitude, but he also seemed like a thoroughly good guy. Wish him well.

That precisely it.  People want good things to happen to good people, and football is no different.
