They managed to finish third in a group involving Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Belarus. They had six points from the first three games (they lost 2-1 at home to Azerbaijan) and some boffin account had them 99.4% chance of pot 4, then they proceeded to lose to Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan (again) and could only manage a 1-1 at home to Belarus. Shows how quickly things can change in International football, they were looked at as a superior team only a year or 2 ago.

Two years ago we finished 6 points ahead of them in the Nations League while they were relegated. They were a bit better than us in WC 2018 qualifying but that was 5 or 6 years ago now. They've been in decline for a while.

I’m not convinced we were actually any better than them in that group though. Both beat each other 1-0 and took only a single point off Israel, but we were very lucky that we managed to twice face a covid depleted Czech side whilst the Slovakians lost both games to their former compatriots. We might well have struggled if we’d had to play Czech Republic at full strength.

We also missed a heap of chances in that away game and should have beaten them IIRC. We weren't great but they looked poor.
craigkillie
The Czech team was not hugely depleted the second time we played them.

Hendricks
You only need to look back at the play of paths for Euro 2020 to understand that most of the really big nations will qualify automatically. Below was the 4 paths for the 2020 play offs. I've put which pot they are in for the Euro 2024 qualifying draw and which Nations League each country will be in for the next Nations League 2023-24 . It's quite interesting to note that our path has done by far the best (3 teams gone all the way to League A and 3 into pot 2) and that you could easily find yourself with a harder play off game depending on where teams are in a cycle of players etc. Scotland should be very positive about qualifying automatically but it's huge to have a play off in our pockets. Path A : Iceland League B and Pot 3 Bulgaria League C and Pot 4 Hungary League A and Pot 1 Romania League C and Pot 3 Path B : Bosnia League A and Pot 2 Slovakia League C and Pot 5 N.Ireland League C and Pot 5 Rep. Ireland League B and Pot 3 Path C : Scotland League A and Pot 2 Norway League B and Pot 3 Serbia League A and Pot 2 Israel League A and Pot 2 Path D : Georgia League B and Pot 4 N Macedonia League C and Pot 4 Kosovo League C and Pot 4 Belarus League D and Pot 5

Hendricks
Something to note with the next Nations League campaign is that we won't be playing any of these fixtures for at least 18 months! So a Germany who looked fucking gash against England last night could have an entirely new side or a Belgium who will have lost even more of their 'golden' generation could be going through a transitional period. Plenty will change plus our young players will be even better!!! The reason for this is that due to this years World Cup the calendar is all over the place and 2023 will see Euro 2024 qualifiers in March, June, September, October and November. So Nations League won't start until March 2024. How they fit those around the actual Euro Championships in the summer of 2024 and then World Cup 2026 qualifying, is anyones guess!
craigkillie
The calendar is actually getting back to normal. The first two editions of the Nations League happened in September-November before the "proper" qualifiers took place in the following March-November - this is actually the one that is out of line, it took place at a slightly earlier time (June-September) to accommodate the World Cup. You can look back at the Euro 2020 cycle, the only one fully mapped before covid hit - the Nations League was September-October-November 2018, the qualifiers were March-June-September-October November 2019 and the play-offs were supposed to be March 2020. For WC 2022 the Nations League was September-October-November 2020 and the qualifiers were March-June-September-October-November 2021, with the play-offs (except ours) in March 2022. For WC 2026 it'll almost certainly be the Nations League in September-October-November 2024 and the qualifiers in March-June-September-October-November 2025 - it's not clear if the play-offs will be in March again or if everything will have to be done by November.

Donathan
In the (fairly unlikely) event that all the pot 1 and 2 teams qualify directly then the playoff games will be, I believe Georgia v Kazakhstan Greece v Turkey Ukraine v Slovenia Iceland v Norway Estonia v Albania Latvia v Republic of Ireland
Paco
There’s definitely still a route to a stinker of a group but playing the odds, it’s terrific that we definitely avoid teams like France/England/Serbia/Czechs. Ukraine, Norway and Sweden surely the three to avoid from Pot 3 - obviously not inconceivable we finish above them, but when we could be looking at genuine shite like Armenia or Albania… Most pots seems to have them. Sweden or Armenia, Turkey or Macedonia, Slovakia or Gibraltar. And if we’re brutally honest for other sides, France or Scotland. The draw makes or breaks it.
