Divisional Round Weekend

That play on 2nd down sums up why I fucking hate these D's that use a heap of 2-high and light fronts. They are totally incapable of stopping the run even when everyone on the planet knows it's coming. It's invariably 3-4 yards before contact, a drag-tackle, then the pile gets moved for another couple of yards every time.

There's no reason for the Bengals to think about throwing it. Even a 3 and out takes a couple of minutes off the clock. It was obvious they are going to run it now on almost every play.

Yeah, it's not just a situational thing though. The way these Fangio/2-high D's are built, they go almost exclusively for DT's who play a single gap, and the DE/OLB's are usually pass-rushing specialists. So there's nobody to set the edge v the run, there's nobody playing in the middle that can hold their ground against C/OG double-teams, the secondary level players invariably get wiped out of the play because even the LB's are usually undersized and coverage players first and foremost, so they do not have the personnel to stand up to any competent running game, even when everyone knows an inside run is coming.

The Rams got away with it because Donald is like playing with a huge space-eating NT and a pass-rushing terror at the same time, so he's essentially worth an extra DL on the field at all times, plus Ramsey can play anyone 1 v 1 and doesn't need Safety help so that gives you another resource to plug the gaps, but for ordinary teams like the Chargers, even though they have decent players like James and Bosa, they still can't stop the run even when they shift it up and play 5 down linemen. They're just too lightweight. FWIW, I thought Derwin James was extremely disappointing for the most part this year, and I don't think it's coincidence that our best D performances coincided with the games he missed. Staley moves him around far too much, so much so that I think that for the other 10 players it adds an extra layer of confusion to what is already a complex scheme. He was also responsible for blowing his assignment twice in the Jags WC meltdown and gave up 2 TD's by himself, and that's been totally overlooked.
