South Challenge Cup 2023-24

Recommended Posts

R1 & R2 being draw tonight.

With the admission of Linton Hotspur and Knightswood, this season's tournament would have become the biggest cup in Scottish senior football since the early 1890s: but Easthouses and Lochore being debarred for offences last season, and Newburgh returning, means it remains joint biggest with previous edition at 163 clubs.

Is still pooled into 4 zones in R1 & R2. Broomhill relocated from NE to NW; and in boundary adjustments groundsharing Ashfield and Finnart have been moved from NW to NE; plus Linlithgow Rose from NE to SE. Albion Rovers also make their debut. Spartans cannot defend their title.

After a strong start EOSL ultimately had a poor showing last season with nobody reaching SFs and only Sauchie making QFs... hopefully a better performance this time.

A Bo'ness derby would be like an old Star Trek episode with the good Captain Kirk battling it out with an evil one from a parallel universe.

Will be interesting to see what Albion Rovers' first taste of this competition will be. Away to Luncarty might give them a bit of a reality check in more ways than one.

Haddington v CSS is the pick of the ties I’ve seen so far in the East section. Winner away to Leith in R2.

Penicuik v Dalkeith in R2 will give the locals a chance to moan about Midlothian Council favouring Dalkeith for gritters, transport and generally moan about being overlooked by the council. They don’t take long to get going about this stuff.

Sadly they never got West Park Utd away in Round 2.

Would be reality big style playing in the cage off Auchinairn Rd in the rain. Uncovered terracing less than half a pitch in length on one railing level pitch side for the away fans and no catering, lavvies.

Welcome to non league.

Draw takes ages... it's effectively 8 separate cup draws back-to-back.

Some local derbies in there, and Dunipace will be fancied against Finnart... cracking tie for Newburgh returning from their ban v freshly relegated Albion Rovers.

Most ties against clubs from other leagues are pretty winnable albeit tough for Hill of Beath... derbies may include Camelon v Dunipace and Kinnoull v Jeanfield.

Again some attractive derbies, including a rare Ormiston v Tranent encounter... though hosts like Tynecastle and Haddington up against it. Linton debut at home.

Some delicious encounters including Leith v Civil SS, Penicuik v Dalkeith plus Broxburn v Whitburn... but Newtongrange face a formidable task.

Aye cause Cliftonhill is a 5 star stadium.

Well ok compared to Huntershill it is. 🤔🤔🤔

Campbeltown - Vale of Leven seems to be missing from round 1?

Interesting weekend in store.

Focusing on the ties against non-EOSL opposition: Tynecastle v Gala is being played tonight and looks very interesting as the hosts have started the season more brightly than might have been expected - similarly the visitors more weakly. Haddington v Civil Service also seems difficult to call - albeit the Hi Hi shaded an EOS Qualifying Cup encounter at Marine Drive only 10 days ago.

Newburgh and Ormiston are almost certainly on 'hidings-to-nothing' at home to Albion Rovers and Tranent respectively. Dunipace return to Westfield after the arson and should be favourites against Finnart.

Harthill-Blackburn plus several Fife derbies add flavour.

Coldstream v Vale of Leithen reunites the surviving EOSL founders only 3 weeks before the 100th anniversary of their historic opening match.

I was at tonight's game at Meggetland, where both sides contributed to an entertaining contest. I'm sure that each side felt they had done enough to win it.

Tynecastle had the better of the first half and could have led by more than a single goal at the break, the goal coming from Russell Cairns after 15 minutes.  They doubled their advantage within 15 seconds of the restart after Mackenzie Scott capitalised on a defensive error. Thereafter GFR dominated the game, and got a goal back after 64 mins with a Jack Beaumont strike from 25 yards. However it took until the 92nd minute for Nicky Reid to fire in the equaliser.

Extra time continued with GFR looking the more likely side, but the turning point was a red card for Jack Beaumont midway through the first period. He was about to be shown a yellow card, but it was upgraded to a straight red after telling the ref to "F Off".  Tynie got themselves back into the game as a result, with the winner coming from a Ryan Cameron penalty with 7 minutes left.
