So was it 2 qualifying in those days? Obviously NI qualified so surprising Portugal were third.

Portugal were a bit up and down in the 80s / 90s. They didn’t qualify for anything between 86 and 96. Even the team that spanked Scotland 5-1 didn’t qualify for USA 94. Them being perennial contenders certainly wasn’t the case until the the last 20 years or so.

That McCoist goal is my earliest memory of seeing Scotland playing - and the one that got me hooked.

The Norway goal is spectacular, but surely Leighton's badly at fault there (unless there's a deflection or something you can't see in the footage)?

My first memory of Scotland was the first game of that qualifying campaign against Norway.

Yes mate two qualified automatically.

We went through ta 0-0 in Belfast in October '81 and the N Ireland fans thought they were out because they didn't beat us (Alan Rough had a  fine game). But the Portugal V Sweden game kicked off later and it went in their favour,

and , IIRC , we only drew with Portugal a

That was the funny thing about how that campaign started.

We won the opener in Stockholm, drew 0-0 with Portugal at Hampden then won in Tel Aviv and drew with Northern Ireland in Glasgow.

So two narrow 1-0 away wins and two drawn at home, At the time it seemed we weren't capitalising on the home fixtures.

Was the second goal started by Gary Gillespie going down the left wing ?

Yes, the opening win in Sweden with a Strachan goal was a big result, as it transpired.

The away game in Israel was notable for taking place in the afternoon during the week.  We had a student teacher taking our P6 class.  Presumably by accident, rather than design, she had us doing a project on Israel at the time.  It was a good premise on which to allow us to listen to the match on the Radio.
