SCOTLAND AND THE BBC

Just about to watch Wales v Turkey on the free-to-air channel S4C ( a kind of Welsh ALBA affair). The game is also on Pay channel Viaplay. Turns out every single Wales Euro qualifier has been free to air on S4C, and yet no Scotland qualifiers were free-to-air. How come? HaS BBC Scotland been pretending that if a match is on Viaplay then it can’t possibly be shown on terrestrial, which is obviously not true? Or is their so-called commitment to the national team a sham cos they won’t fork out for the matches?

Having a necessity to have the Scotland games in Gaelic is probably a more realistic shout of getting them of terrestrial tele than waiting on the BBC or STV to bother bidding tbf

The SFA do not sell the broadcasting rights for Scotland games, it’s UEFA, so it’s obviously some kind of broadcasting agreement which the companies have struck with UEFA to show Wales games.

Both may be exaggerated but perhaps 20-25% of Welsh speak Welsh... while about 1% of Scots speak Gaelic.

Would only be a 'stalking horse' for free-to-air... hence UEFA/SFA/TV companies/etc. would oppose.

It very obviously is true, because Viaplay bought the exclusive UK-wide rights to Scotland games (and all other non-England qualifiers/Nations League matches). They then sub-licensed rights to S4C to fulfil the legal obligation for Welsh-language coverage.

I'm not sure why you'd think the BBC could just decide to show a game they don't have the rights to?

20,699 at Hampden for the San Marino game on a cold Sunday night in October 2019.

How many would have been there if it had been on BBC Scotland live?

Not sure it's as great an idea as it seems - I was at the game but in a similar future  situation I might very well think twice about going and consider watching at home.

Sure, crowds have picked up since lockdown due to results but that could easily change again.
