Africa Cup of Nations 2023

Something miserably depressing about yet another tournament coming down to four prior winners, despite an awful lot of surprises along the way. At least the DRC and South Africa are both a bit shit and haven't won the tournament in ages.

Still, countries like Mali and Cape Verde have nobody to blame but themselves, as they should've had their matches put to bed well before the end. Looks like an inevitable Nigeria v Ivory Coast final, which the former should win as probably the best team over the piece; f**k knows how Ivory Coast are still even in this.

If successful the Leopards will have won this competition under 3 different names - Congo Kinshasha, Zaire, and DR Congo - which would presumably be unique in international football?

I wonder who's competed under the most names/unions/boundaries?

I occasionally get a surprise at the country names when looking back at old tournaments, or even just the number of flags they've flown under. The Irish Free State originally competing at Olympics and World Cups was a recent one.

Is that the names they officially entered under, or just the English programme writer doing whatever the f**k he wanted?

Ireland v Netherlands officially.

EDIT:

Article 4 of the Irish constitution adopted in 1937 by the government under Éamon de Valera states "Éire is the name of the state, or in the English language, Ireland ".[6] Initially, after 1937 the United Kingdom insisted on using only the name "Eire" and refused to accept the name "Ireland". It adopted the Eire (Confirmation of Agreements) Act 1938 putting in law that position. At the 1948 Summer Olympics in London the organisers insisted that the Irish team march under the banner "Eire" notwithstanding that every other team was marching according to what their name was in English.

That's a real eye-roller, isn't it. What a petty bunch of bitches we can be.

I remember growing up in the Eighties referring to Ireland as Eire, and I'm wondering if that's how it was referred to on the TV/wireless. It's always been Ireland (or the Republic of) everywhere since then (except, presumably, in Ireland).

I've seen Scotland play the USSR,the CIS&Russia within about 4 years

Aren't they masquerading as The Football Union of Russia now for some reason? Don't think it's helped them much.

Definitely Not Russia would be good. The Aggressor Formerly Known as Russia. I Can't Believe It's Not Russia?

Tbf it has always been a way of ensuring clarity if referring to both, as more chance of confusion or mistake with 'Northern Ireland' and 'Ireland', particularly during the period before the prefix "Republic of" was adopted. Obviously legal issues and emotions were fresher in 1930s & 1940s too.

Football-wise both called themselves Ireland: it wasn't until 1953 that FIFA ordered them 'Republic of Ireland' and 'Northern Ireland' respectively. However in the British Home Championship, Amateur Championship, etc. the north remained simply Ireland until 1970s. To this day it's "Irish Football Association" and the league only became "Northern Ireland" in 2013 having been Irish League until 2003 and IPL until 2008.

Most recent example on Ebay is 1992:

Considering I've always tried to get spotless work areas to photograph my eBay items, it amazes me how many people just carelessly chuck them down on their ratty, stained carpet that hasn't seen a hoover since J Edgar.

Is that the old CIS Insurance logo there? And if so is that your doing or Wikipedia's?

I don't get the impression they had much time to come up with anything better than the two efforts on Wiki

The top one was apparently the fleg they used at Euro 92. I like the use of italics for the second; the typing pool did a cracking job implying dynamism with the new features of WordStar.

Flag of the Commonwealth of Independent States - Wikipedia

Former flag[edit]

Before the flag was adopted, a provisional flag just showing the letters "C.I.S." on a white background was used, e.g. at sporting events where a Commonwealth team replaced the Soviet Union when the Soviet Union had qualified for but never came to before it was dissolved.

Here's a nice example from 1952 when Scotland apparently faced 'Ireland' twice in space of 6 weeks in Glasgow and Dublin; former being at Ibrox, you can guess which Ireland it actually is...

Continuing the O/T chat, this was the first programme I bought at Hampden, for what was actually Northern Ireland's home game...

Extremely routine save by the Nigeria keeper praised to the hilt by the commentators.  I take it it has been that type of tournament?
