Unfortunately both LA 2028 + Brisbane 2032 will be less amenable viewing times.

US finish top on Silvers... although North American media rank by total medals anyway IIRC.

GB's lowest finish since Athens 2004 - probably a few reasons: Lottery funding that ramped up from 2005-2012 has fallen back; more nations have started investing similarly (particularly Japan/France/Australia eyeing Tokyo/Paris/Brisbane); new sports added we've less tradition in; 14 Gold against 22 Silver/29 Bronze reflects many near-misses whereas Japanese... and DutchΒ :o...Β 'over delivered' at le crunch.

Cricket ffs.Β

Some of the applicants for Brisbane 2032 are hilarious... Baseball-Softball and Cricket want back in again (latter understandably given Australia tbf), also Netball though this causes an unusual equity issue given there is not a mens program to speak of.Β However we then enter very odd territory with Lifesaving, Team Frisbee, Trail Running - which I think is basically orienteering? - plus Rugby League want 'Rugby XIII 9s' which surely won't happen.

They may as well remove boxing as any semblance of fairness and integrity went right out of the window in the last fortnight.Β  Even the darkest days of the pro game would have struggled to match some of these decisions.

Β

Looks like the summer Olympics is rotating between Americas/ Europe and Africa/Asia in terms of timezones so should get one in 2036. I also suspect the big events like athletics and swimming in LA will be scheduled for primetime on the US east coast so might not be too late so maybe ending 2am instead of 5am.Β

The last bit will screw with me more than any of the new sports, as long as I can remember swimming has always been the focus of week 1 and then athletics comes in.

At least 2 of the new sports just seem like the Yanks wanting to boost their medals a bit more.Β

Mexico City 1968 was essentially the last occasion!

14 gold seems quite poor given recent standards. Like the yanks they've suddenly started caring about Silvers and Bronzes

Taken as a whole there have clearly been more occasions when an athlete or team has lost in SFs or Final, come up short in last stage, etc... e.g. previous games Gold/Silver/Bronze balance has been fairly even - except London 2012 (which is no surprise as hosts usually over-perform with extra Β£, familiarity and before a home crowd - indeed for all their staging is being lauded France have rather misfired finishing 5th on 16/26/22):
