Just knew Liverpool would get Real Madrid.

Got to wait for the fixture details until Saturday now. No different from the old format tbf.

They have drawn last years Champions league finalists and winners of the Europa League...however i am not sure they could have hand picked a better set of home fixtures.....away games not so much ( but they dinna win them anyway so free hits.....)

What the actual f**k?!

Who the hell came up with this horseshit?

This promises to be one of the most boring drawn out competitions of all time.  Up there with this summers’ euros and the old Scottish league cup group sections where you played each other home and away which had everyone bored of football by the end of September.

Take it back to the old European cup! Straight knock out

The UEFA Cup was always going to be the second tier competition but when they changed it to group stage competition it really took the gloss off it and it hasn't recovered since for me imo. Clubs took the games more seriously as they knew they couldn't piss about with the knock out ties.

The point of the change is that, until this year, the 8 teams in pot 1 all avoided each other. Now the 9 teams in pot 1 all play two games against each other. Those are the matches that drive TV audiences and revenues and they've increased the number of them from zero to nine. When we see the fixture list I imagine none of them will be played at the same time.

There's also considerably less peril for the top clubs, because only a third of clubs are eliminated in the group stage instead of half and more matches mean you can get away with a few bad performances.

Neutrals and "fans" who have never and will never see their team in person are who this is for.

QUESTION ?

If 5 or 3 teams finish level on points and goals, from different sections. Who goes through ???

Example , 10 teams in the league go through ? But places 8-11 have the same points and goals ?

Will there need to be more matches played to decide winners of league posisitions ?

Tiebreakers

Teams will be ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss). If two or more teams are equal on points upon completion of the league phase, the following tiebreaking criteria are applied, in the order given, to determine their rankings:[2]

  1. Goal difference;
  2. Goals scored;
  3. Away goals scored;
  4. Wins;
  5. Away wins;
  6. Higher number of points obtained collectively by league phase opponents;
  7. Superior collective goal difference of league phase opponents;
  8. Higher number of goals scored collectively by league phase opponents;
  9. Lower disciplinary points total (direct red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points);
  10. UEFA club coefficient.

Thanks for that !

What does no 6. mean ?

so liverpool have 16 points. and psv have 16 points in positions 10 and 11. And have equal stats ?

They tot up the points gained by the seven teams each team played against. Higher total progresses. Presumably taking it as an indication that your 16 points were gained against a better class of opponent

Real Marid finish 11th in the league. Won 5 games. same goals, cards, etc

Barcelona finish 10th in the league. Won 5 Games. same goals, cards ,etc

So would you need to go by club rankings of all the teams faced ?

Not rankings. Points gained by the seven clubs they faced.

Barca opponents collectively gained 56 points

Reals collectively gained 51 points.

Barcelona go through
