A similarish thing happened on the Pars email group (which must have started about 1996 or something - it was before fan sites were a thing (certainly it was before dafc.net and presumably before Pie and Bovril was a thing?) and had the usual discussions about matches, signings, rumours, new kits and the like. 

One day at email came into the group from someone using a known email address saying it was the partner of that user and that he had died. There were the usual tributes and so on, and folk said they'd send flowers to the funeral (the guy was abroad I think - either in the USA or the Far East somewhere). Months and months passed - perhaps even years - when another email from the same address saying that actually the guy hadn't died and it was all some kind of hoax/scam? Nobody knew what to believe - had the guy died and this was someone using a dormant address, had the guy not died, had the guy been in prison? I don't think it was ever resolved and AFAIK it just petered out as email groups died out and people moved onto message boards. Still a weird time though.

Still the worst one on here was the Dundee Utd fan, Pacman83 who was constantly going on about the presenters on daytime telly sending him subliminal messages on air and f**king with his head. At first, most of us thought it was just a bit and sort of laughed it off but this went on for several months to the point where we were telling him to seriously seek help as it went way beyond sticking to the gimmick. Everyone who tried to engage him got nowhere.

Another Utd fan who knew him came on here a few months after his last post to confirm that what was afflicting him mentally was very, very real and he'd ended up committing suicide. Still think about the poor b*****d sometimes and the help he clearly needed but chose not to get.

Yes that was absolutely brutal. He went on about Match of the Day presenters talking to him too. Such a shame.

I had never read about that before. That's actually really sad.

Believing that people on the television are conveying subliminal messages to you is a textbook Schizophrenia symptom. I have worked with so many people who have expressed similar beliefs.

Unfortunately, despite sounding really farfetched and delusional to most people, such things appear real to the person experiencing them. Tragically the distress these experiences cause people is also very, very real and can drive them to desperate actions.
