About 30 odd years ago, this was an activity my dad would hand over to a 10 year old me of a weekend. And I can set a carburetor, change the spark plugs and, thanks to my father's awful 78 Vauxhall Viva (I passed my test in it!) Nice, I had a '73 Mustang with a 351 Cleveland and a nasty habit of shooting a stream of petrol out of the accelerator pump and onto the hot engine. The distributer died, and we hooked it to an engine analyzer and it was trying to fire on "all 13 cylinders". So a distributer change joined my repertoire in addition to using the girlfriend's emery board to file/clean the points. Cheers - I suspected as much but a quick check online said that depending on the vehicle the fob may activate both doors and engine remotely- I thought that had to be BS as cars would be getting stolen left, right and centre. As for points - I have never cleaned, adjusted or replaced points. As TxRover says, my car (Kia Sorento) wouldn't start unless the key was physically inside the car. If it's not and you try to start it, it just beeps at you and complains about the key not being detected. Yep, as I said I suspected what I had read was BS. Not having owned a car for almost 20 years I was a bit surprised at the remote locking/unlocking system as anybody could nip in behind you and open the door and grab whatever was on the seat.
