Dee Man
My step daughter worked in the Fred Perry shop in London. I'm resplendent in my FP Harrington. 80's Harringtons were fucking cool.
xbl
It was just one coastal resort in particular the boys were talking about. They said it is Romania's version of Ibiza which is probably exaggerating slightly but they do reckon it's 24hr partying. Disappointing to hear about the price of booze considering they were talking about 50p a pint or something stupid like that. The £100 a night for three stunners of your choice sounded good value for money though. (For my mates obviously). Just looked the place up - Constanta. I have to be honest, I thought the booze was going to be a lot cheaper than it was, but in my experience, while most things are cheaper, the booze didn't seem to be all that much of a saving. I can't remember individual pints, but I remember those shots, and they weren't cheap! It was 10 leu a shot, with an exchange rate of about 5 to a pound. There isn't really a binge drinking culture either, as people tend to frown on falling about drunk behaviour (I discovered this one night. ). I'd imagine it might be different in the coastal resorts though, much like the Spanish resort towns are different from Spain, so your mates might be right there! I was there with some Romanian friends I know, so I can't comment on the cost for stunners! I spent a fair bit of time just wandering the place, ended up going to a couple of museums and galleries too, so didn't really have any properly mad drunken nights. Fascinating country though, for a whole host of reasons.

My mates went years ago to a Scotland game and asked the taxi driver about....erm...ladies of the night, shall we say. He took them to his house and got his wife out of bed and offered her to them. They declined and went elsewhere, at least that's what they told me.

How much for a weekend all inclusive?

ICTChris
My mate went through Romania on a round the world trip a few years back and some of her companions were robbed by 'Gypsies' (their description). My cousin is a developmental architect (me neither) and he's been there and spoke highly of the Roma community, saying they are discriminated against and get a bad deal. My first memory of Romania was the Ceauşescus' being executed on Christmas Day, with the trial and executions broadcast on state television. They were the only Communist state that killed it's leaders during the revolutions in 1989. From wikipedia On 24 December, Ion Iliescu, head of the newly formed Council of the National Salvation Front signed a Decree on the establishment of the Extraordinary Military Tribunal. The trial was held on 25 December, lasted for about 2 hours, and delivered death sentences to the couple. The execution followed immediately, on the spot, being carried out by three paratroopers with their service rifles. Sounds like they took their criminal justice policy from the Daily Mail.

Took it like a man.

ICTChris
Having watched telly this Christmas, I think grainy footage of a paratrooper shooting an elderly couple would be better than the shite they put on.

It should be made into a Christmas tradition that is both entertaining and terrifying as two pensioners are 'surprised' on Chirstmas day live in front of the nation by having thier old b*****d heads shot off.

The Romanians are always at pains to point out that the "Romany people" is an entirely artificial term and is really nothing to do with Romania. But yeah, the gyspsy community does exist, but they really do get a bad deal. Regarding gypsy beggars, I got far more hassle from beggars in Paris than I ever did in Romania. The interesting thing (for me) about the fall of Ceauşescu is the radical difference it made. Honestly, nobody above 35 seems to speak a word of English, because the borders were always closed and it wasn't encouraged. After the fall though, the borders opened, and English learning because a massive priority. Also, because the borders were closed for so long, unlike most European countries, all their imported tv shows and films were subtitled rather than dubbed. It means that the age/linguistic divide is starker than any I've ever seen.

I'd like to go there, Bucharest would be an interesting place to visit. Edited January 12, 2013 by ICTChris

Yeah, I can imagine he'd be mortally offended, the Romanians are very sensitive about their association with gypsies, and you can see why. I mind my friend being furious a while back when Paris tried to send all their gypsies "back" to Romania, and it annoys them that this is still the main thing Romanians are known for (basically, they are like Bulgaria with a worse marketing department). Its definitely worth a visit, but as I said earlier, I don't really think its a drunken stag do type of place.

ffcsam
When you are in the pub in company and a rarely seen friend suddenly decides they want to join the round you are in. Now, after we have all bought this guy a beer, he is still sitting on his hands. Quiet word needed methinks
