The other thing to do is get fitted for shoes at a specialist shop and then look for them cheaper on line. I go for ascis 1100 range and usually pick up the last years version for £50 to £70 online. I have 3 pairs at the moment - one pair just about done, one pair broken in and a 3rd pair still in the box.

To be honest, this is why I think shops like Run4it should charge for fitting (say £10) and give you a £10 voucher against shoes in their shop. If you decide to go elsewhere, at least they have made something out of it

To be honest everytime I have been fitted for shoes (3 times - didnt like the brooks I was recommended) I have bought that pair - every subsequent pair has been purchased online.

Yeah I tend to agree. I did the gait analysis at Run4It and was advised to get Brooks Vapor 9s. Which I promptly did online for £30 cheaper than they were offering them for. Would have happily took the £10 hit for the advice received.

Itzdrk I would certainly recommend you get along to run 4it or another proper running shop and get fitted correctly if you're running regularly. I did this when I started and found I over pronate badly. Getting good fitting trainers and a pair of super feet inserts has worked wonders - no injuries in 3 years!

Both run4it and sweatshop have pretty good sales on at the moment. You probably want to spend about £100 but could get something good for half that right now. Sweatshop have 50% off on Adidas for example and the mizunos I swear by are down to £65 from £125 in run 4 it.

Worth mentioning most folks recommend you change trainers after about 500 miles.

Hope that helps

Cheers for the advice , ill take that into consideration

Hey guys, went out for my second ever run today. Last one was in late December. Please be gentle but attached are my stats using some app.

My plan is to run a bit further each day, with the aim of doing the 5k park run in two weeks. Does anyone think thats doable or have any other feedback or advice for a beginner?

I think that's doable! 9 min per mile is a good comfortable pace. Your 5k would take you about 30 minutes at that pace. So I'd build slowly - add a couple of minutes each run until Park Run, and you'll get there. Take it easy, stop if you get sore. Have fun!

That should be doable mate. I would focus on slowly up distance with each run. If you are able to do 4km then you are ready for a 5k, as the race always carries you along the last k.

9 mins 40 secs per mile pace is pretty good for a beginner btw.

Best bit of advice I received when I started running was - go out more often than you think you should, don't run as fast as you think you should, don't go as far as you think you should.

That way it becomes habit but doesn't get demoralising,

2013 was really great till Easter. I was running on the X-C really strong. Then I was ill. Little did I know, but I had the early stages of cancer growing in my bowel. So I did pretty much nothing from April till August. I got the pollup out and managed to run the GNR in 1:45:28 with 4 weeks training. Then had my operation on my bowel then I've just concentrated on getting fit again. I have to admit I was ranked 642nd in the UK for the 3000m s/c with my worst time in 4 years!

In 2014 I want to smash my 5 and 10k pbs. 5K would be sub 20 mins, and 10k would be sub 44 mins. I want to get a PB of under 12mins 50 secs in the 3000m s/c. Now I am 35 I qualify to be a Master, so I would like to win some medals at over 35 level in the region.

I have done 2 x 3k efforts on Sunday, Gym on Monday, Hill session on Tuesday. Gym on Wednesday. 4 x 1k efforts tonight - got my fastest time of 3mins 33secs for the course. Gym tomorrow.

my core is pretty much non-existent and I'm going to do a lot more trail running in the he woods to help protect my joints.

planks and side-planks will help with your core.

Good pace for when you're just starting out. When I was starting out, I just ran round Cathkin Park - prefer that to the streets, traffic, etc. However, that's not really feasible in winter and it can be very monotonous to see the same scenery over and over again!

My only advice would be to do what you're doing and start from home, then run your 2k but not in a loop, then you're 2km from home so forced to double it - even if you have to walk or slow done in places.

Good luck to all doing Edinburgh Winter Run 5k tomorrow - looks reasonable forecast. I got my number eventually couple of days ago and surprised to see I am in fast zone. Hope to get a sub 19m but realistically under 20 would be ace.

Did an 8 mile on Monday first thing in 58m and gentle 30 min jog today. Feel stiff but just usual pre race nerves.

Get a fucking haircut and you'll go twice as fast, hippy.

But seriously, your motivator should be that if I can do half marathons and 10ks and stuff you certainly can!

Thanks yeah, I'm doing those as well as a circuits class once a week which has a lot of core work built in.

Have had a couple of days off. Took the baby out in the running buggy on wed and managed 5k in under 30 mins which was the first time I've done that while pushing the buggy. :-)
