300 is already a formidable 1st innings score on this pitch. Would expect India to add another 50 or 60, more if Smasher Pant gets into his stride. It's looking like win the toss, win the game. Shades of Gatting with the Kohli dismissal. Absolutely bamboozled by a stunning ball from Mo. Pretty sure he thought it came back off Foakes otherwise he would have walked.

Good day for India I have to think, looking at this pitch Ravi Ashwin must be looking forward to bowling on it & England need to be copying Joe Roots approach to sweeping everything in sight. 2nd T20 between Pakistan & SA just about to start btw.

You are crediting Kohli with way too dignity.  He was offended by being bamboozled by Ali. And threw a tantrum.

Yup, win the toss, win the game. You can stick a fork in this one. Fantastic take from Smasher there to make it 87-6. Three innings of 150 or less incoming.

I’m beginning to think this pitch isn’t up to standard

Some more dubious umpiring there.  No way was he playing a shot.  Home umpires are like manna from heaven to the Indian cricketing public.

A very poor decision. The umpire has called a shot being offered but surely the third umpire can see that it hasn't. The fact that it is shown to be hitting half way up middle stump will not help Joe Root's mood. This is why we have neutral umpires and post covid we will again.

It's an absolute embarrassment for a test match pitch, for divots to be flying out of it the way they were on day 1 is a joke. Of course, nothing will be be said about it because it's India.

No reason why they shouldn't have right now, it would be far easier to set up 5 neutral umpires & a match referee in a bio secure bubble than it is to get the enlarged England squad & support staff in the same. Easy enough to then rotate them through the tests & the additional cost per umpire has been quoted as £3.5k vs using homers which is pennies in the context of the tv rights.

To be fair, there wasn't a great deal said about it here in the first test either because the roles were reversed. I agree, it's not great but thankfully, for the sake of sporting integrity, each side has won one toss each. Hopefully the pitch will be better for the final two tests in Gujarat.

Pitches almost always deteriorate, but the first test pitch held together much better than this one.
