The way Cook captains is similar to the way that players like Pietersen and Trott and Broad play. They're all talented, but there's a complete inability to alter their approach depending on the situation.

ETA: Excluding Pietersen's last two innings where he actually played for the team.

Can I just say amongst the hoo ha of Engerlands shiteness that Rogers century was one of the best test centuries I have seen. Played to perfection with his run selections, shot placements, strike rate etc. truly brilliant ton at the perfect time! Well played son

Kallis is one of the games true greats, a wonderful all round talent.

Getting back to the joke that is England, Cook really is a dreadful captain. He had no previous experience of captaincy yet England went down the old route of let's pick our best player to be skipper without any real thought as to his suitability. He is negative and one dimensional and just lets the game drift.

As a result of picking Cook their best player is off the boil as the weight of skippering gets him down and as such England have lost their most consistently effective batsman, setting the tone for the rest of the side. Bell has also been shite and has returned to his normal standard of making starts and throwing it away. It's all became a bit stale and England are now a very boring side so for me a change of coach and captain is needed.

The selection policy over the last year has been baffling which was epitomised by the inability to find a partner for Cook, despite starting to forge a good partnership with Compton, the selection of Bairstow, the belief that Root is anything other than a number 6 at present and the bewildering decision to take the awful Monty on tour. Furthermore the selection of Bresnan is odd seeing as he is clearly not fit and Tremlett is so knackered and done he shouldn't have been anywhere near the squad.

The coaching staff also seem to have wrecked a fantastic talent in Finn who now looks as wayward as Harmison in Brisbane all those years ago., Graham Onions must really have pissed somebody off.

Of course the odd selections started a wee while back and who can forget the bizarre inclusion of Woakes and Kerrigan in the last test of the summer which seemed as if the selectors have been on the lash all night.

An interesting summer awaits England and we shall see which direction they decide to move in.

Good post. Agree with the synopsis of Cook. Too many players have come on this tour out of form and they have crashed and burned spectacularly. Root is never a No. 3 batsman. The only light I have seen for England is Stokes coming through.

I feel that Flowers might call it a day after this series, but who to bring in??.

A big rebuilding job ahead for the visit of India.

Stokes is about the only England player who emerges from this hilarious clusterfuck of a tour with any credit at all. The rest have been absolutely woeful.

I'd love to know the justification for Panesar's selection. He's fucking dismal. Totally unable to field and provide any resistance with the bat, and takes very few wickets. Mystifyingly, Cook decides to bring Root on to "spin" the ball early doors in Australia's second innings instead of Panesar, who finally appears, only to get his arse handed to him at 5 an over. Comedy captaincy from Cook.

It's unfair however to merely focus on how shite England have been. Australia have been unremittingly brutal with bat and ball, made few fielding errors and seized on every England f**k up. I'm delighted in particular for Mitchell Johnson who has so often suffered abject humiliation against England. He's now got virtually the entire batting line up shitting themselves. As Reynard said a few pages back, it's great to see a real quick bowler tearing through a pea-hearted batting order, and especially the tail who have been showing continuing desperation to avoid facing him.

A lot has been said about the poor batting but it clearly has not helped that the bowlers are completely out of form. In the past Anderson, Swann and Broad have all managed to save the team - this series there have only been fleeting glimpses of that ability.

Ever since the latter days of Hussain and then Vaughan England have been blessed with an excellent attack and great back up from the first or second change bowlers. They consistently performed at a high level and very often bailed out at times lacklustre batting performances.

Unfortunately there is nobody to throw the ball at as a first change bowler who will either keep the pressure on or take a wicket.

Hopefully Finn gets back into form as he can be that man and a decent spinner is needed as Monty is quite frankly an awful cricketer. Jimmy Anderson looks like he needs a long rest to recuperate and get back to his best form and Broad is another who is always on the verge of injury.

I would give Finn and Rankin a shot in Sydney and leave Anderson & Bresnan out.

I don't think they've been given enough credit for the bit in bold. Their batsmen have been excellent, and their bowlers good (though they were helped immesuarbly by our incompetence), but their work in the field has been absolutely outstanding.

The selection of Bresnan made me irrationally angry because it was so utterly pointless. Yes he's capable of adding 30 or 40 with the bat on a good day, but him trundling in to bowl at 80 mph isn't going to strike fear into the heart of anyone. One of the reasons the top order kept failing was they were being asked to chase down gigantic totals, and adding another bowler who wasn't going to take any wickets wasn't going to help.

New Zealand's Corey Anderson sets a new record for the fastest International century, scoring 100 from 36 balls in a rain shortened 1 dayer against the Windies in which the Kiwis battered 283-4 from just 21 overs! He was ably assisted by Jesse Ryder who also scored a ton in his second match back after being severely beaten up outside a nightclub in March.

Ashes News: Monty doubtful for England with a calf strain which could see Tredwell or Borthwick get a game if he fails to make it. Australia have added uncapped 28 year old Tasmanian batsman Alex Doolan to the squad as cover for Shane Watson should he fail to shake off a groin injury.

Australia have been pretty week with the bat in the first innings. Most of the time their top order has failed to fire and Haddin has bailed them out. Had Mitch been on the English side, likely Australia would have been skittled for under 250 in most first innings, under 200 on some occasions. Steyn, Morkel and Philander will be a different proposition to an out of form Jimmy, Broad and make weights. England and Australia are both good on home conditions but nether really can claim to be 1\2 in the world that is between the Saffies and India. England are not as good as 3-0 at home suggested and not as bad as 5-0 in Oz seems to imply. They were a tired team with a most players out of form.

More wickets than Swann or Hoggard and more runs than everyone bar Tendulkar and Pointing. His average with the ball is about the same as Broad but just imagine the difference to the team had Broad weighed in with 13000 runs at 55. When he weighed anchor and accumulated like Dravid or Chanderpaul he could just suck the life and will out of a bowling attack. Not really a player for the 20/20 fans but it is strictly between him and Sobers as to who was the greatest all rounder ever.
