If Cook can score 4 more runs today he will become only the second man to score 50+ in both innings of his debut and his final test match.

Task achieved.

For some reason India have come out this morning bowling nothing but short stuff.

His next target is 76 to pass Sangakara and go 5th in the all time list. Looking as comfortable as he has for a long time, with no pressure on him about keeping his place in the team.

England's two best players at the crease here, and it's great to watch.

Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler & Curran still to come

You'd fancy at lest one of them to score a lot of runs off not many balls against  a demoralised Indian Bowling attack and under no real pressure

I'd say another 100 runs will be more than enough; Shami apart, the Indian bowlers are going through the motions here.

Edit: India bringing on the bit part spinner and sticking five men on the boundary.  This is insipid captaincy.

Hard to believe how scratchy Cook has been over the past year or so. Averaged something like 22 over the past 10 or so matches now looks like its 2009 again. Ton up

Actually over the previous 10 test matches he was 33.87 because that starts with his 244 not out at Melbourne

Over the  nine games since that and before this one it was only 18.62

22 was his average at the end of his first innings in this match

If he's out next ball he'll be on an average of 26.2 from his last 10 test matches

Is that the first time this series two players have hit centuries in the same innings?

Yes

1st Test: Kohli  (1st Innings, batting second)

2nd Test: Woakes (1st Innings, batting second)

3rd Test: Kohli (2nd Innings, batting first) & Buttler (2nd Innings, batting second)

4th Test: Pujara (1st Innings, batting second)

5th Test: Cook and Root (2nd Innings, batting first)

Why the hell are England still batting here?
Yep, can chuck it any time they like. They already have about 150 of a lead more than the highest successful 4th innings run chase at the Oval.

Gutted that Cook couldn't get to 150. He really has driven home the point of what England will miss now that he has retired.
