He's competitive in that he can make the cut.   The same with Mize and Langer.

The early round cold mist certainly didn't help which is why he played 10-16 so poorly and the rest of the course fine when viability improved and the temp increased.

Sandy's had multiple top 20's the last being 2009 and he's long enough (285yards) to play so absolutely no reason to quit.

Strange, strange comment.   Do you play golf?

Yes I do play golf. Single figure for many years as it happens.

Sandy Lyle is one of my golfing heroes and is one of the  most naturally talented players ever.

His other/ multiple top 20 finishes at Augusta are in fact 3. Tied 11 in 1986, tied 17 in 1987 and then winner the following year in 1988. Winning was a wonderful achievement. He was as you say also T20 in 2009-  so 4 in total but the last one 11 years ago.

As I've already said I'm very happy for him to keep playing but recent evidence would strongly support the view that his days of making the cut are well behind him. I'd love to wrong on that but sadly I think I'm most likely correct. As clarified above him playing does not cost anyone else a spot, so good luck to him next year and beyond. In contrast Langer regularly still makes the cut and finished Tied 8th in 2014.

It's becoming obvious you didn't even watch him but have such strong opinions, based on nothing!

The pull on 16 during round 1 was a classic double-cross and the rest of the damage was due to the worst possible draw.

I'm not certain you've been to Augusta but holes 10,11, 13, 8  and 2nd holds water more than the rest.

Playing first out from the 10th with about 50 yards visibility through the mist was the worst possible draw.

Seve knows far more than you.

Seve says that if all the golfers he played with all played their best Sandy Lyle would win and Seve would be second. Sandy did have a tough draw this year. This doesn't  change the fact that he's not made the cut once since 2014

We both agree Sandy has been a fine player.

I've not been to Augusta, you possibly have.

My "strong opinions" are based on Sandy's recent record at Augusta. That to me, but possibly not you, seems a good place to assess his likely results going forward.

We disagree on Lyle's current and recent ability in terms of making the cut at Augusta going forward.   I can live with the fact we don't and won't agree. Your opinions are every bit as valid as mine, I just happen to disagree with them.

Yep but it's more than 4.  You are just picking any figure and making stuff up.

So you are saying Sandy has more than 4 top 20 finishes in the Masters. Can you list them please.

Whatever his record is, it's testament to Sandy's ability that he turns up at Augusta and at The Open every year but rarely embarrasses himself, despite playing very little competitive golf in between times. Bear in mind he was only a few shots worse off here than guys like Hatton, Wolff and Molinari.

But he wasn't tied 21st.   He was T20th.

I've said this before.

Actually looking at some of the records they do state tied 20th. Others say tied 21st.

Fair enough.  I'm not going to fall out over a single place.

Given this comes from the Masters site happy to concede to you on that.

You think he's competitive. I don't . Let's leave it at that.

I know that.  I play golf.

You don't think he's competitive.  I play golf.

You play off 1-9.  I play golf( +3).

Enjoy your night.

 Are you all right mate?

If that's your attitude on the golf course you must be a joy to play with.

Enjoy your night too.

It's PB - an absolutely fantasist. I think his last alias was off a mere scratch. Must have been some end to the season 😂

Fine, sir just drinking for the well of 'Sandy Lyle knowledge'.

1 of a bout 3 subjects I have a fountain of wealth, alongside European flags and the life and times of William G Stewart.

Apologise for appearing condescending.

No apology required.

I'm a grown up.

Mind you I've no desire to joust on your other areas of specialist interest. They are definitely niche.

Have a good one.

Thanks.

For me it's important to remember that whist we can afford Golf memberships there's others that can't afford to eat or indeed travel.   Day's for example is forced to pedal bike to the golf course.  Foodbanks and pedal bike usage is going up whilst courses are closing.  Idiots still vote Tory.

Cheers.

I'm probably going to give up my membership. I'm now playing off a pathetic 10. You've convinced me it's not worth the effort. 😉

Playing of 10 is disgraceful.

Making a mess of the majority of holes?

I've played Dumfries and County, Lockerbie and Southerness round your way.  Southerness in the Scottish and with pals.

Nah just advancing years.

I'm the same age as Sandy Lyle.  Way past the age for competitive golf.

Sorry, couldn't resist albeit I am actually only 6 months younger than Sandy.

Grew  up playing at Dumfries and County. Southerness is a fantastic course,

"Johnson aside, perhaps the performance of the week belonged to Bernhard Langer. At 63, the German signed off with a 71 for a three-under total and share of 29th. The second of Langer’s Masters wins arrived in 1993. Twenty-seven years on, he outscored Bryson DeChambeau – remember him? – by one. So much for the appliance of science."

We (off PnB) debated the point about Sandy at the start - thinking it started on somebody taking the piss as he was wearing braces on Day 1(?).
Was all very sneery, much like half the contributions above. I’m not a fan, maybe too young to have seen him at his best, but I came to the conclusion he’s earned the right to be there and he’s absolutely not disgracing himself. 60-odds year old and playing +6 round Augusta off the big boys back tees?
Until he’s consistently flat last at the end of Day 2, he’s absolutely entitled to turn up and give it a go.
And as for the ‘I play off +3, I know what I’m talking about and you don’t’ chat. f**k off and work half as hard on your social skills as you clearly have on your golf. I’ll give you the benefit that drink had probably been taken.
