Have you ever seen an English ref take charge of a Scottish club or the national team in football? Or vice versa?
Owens continually jobs French and Italian clubs in Europe and the Pro14.
World Rugby are fine with British refs reffing other British sides. 2007 final England v South Africa had an Irish and 1991 Australia v England had a Welsh ref
Not to mention Owens doing the New Zealand v England semi final just last week!

They knew the rules and refused to move back when told to by the officials, so it was always on the cards. It's laughable how much importance is now put on the Haka, if you watch clips of it from the 70s it is hilarious. I don't mind them doing it tbh, but I don't see why the opposing team should be forced to do anything other than stay in their own half, if they want to go into a huddle and ignore it, that's their call, or even continue warming up like Campese did in 1991.

Talk now if NZ being interested in Rennie taking over there from Hansen, probably as they dont want to sit and watch Warrenball.

Jamie Joseph has been mentioned too, and with him having Japan playing so well he might have a good chance.

As expected both NZ and Wales have rung the changes for the bronze medal match, but the Kiwis look far stronger. I would think they will want to avenge last Saturday's defeat so it could be a tough shift for the Welsh. Which would be nice, would love to see Gatland finish up with a 30 point defeat.

The AB back line is arguably even stronger than the one they had at the weekend.

I honestly thought you weren’t allowed to do that.

As long as it's an open hand and there is minimal extension of the arm it's ok.

What an offload by SBW and line by Crotty. Still think they should have picked those two last week

Imagine having centres who can do that, Townsend.

Is having only 2 professional (full time) teams in Scotland the reason why we have so little strength in depth? Could we support (financially) 2 or 3 more teams like the Welsh and Irish have? Aberdeen? Dundee? Stirling?

It's still the long term plan, but finance has been the problem. It's only in the last couple of years that they finally paid off the debt from the Murrayfield redevelopment.

When they decided to do that in 1992/3, they could obviously afford it because rugby was never going to go professional...

Whether the SRU’s claim to be finally “debt free” is technically true is a question for accountants to quibble over but they’re clearly in a better place than they were 12 years ago when the Border Reivers folded. Never mind 22 years ago when Caledonia Reds (Aberdeen/Perth) played their last game. So there must be some consideration of the idea

Glasgow’s relative success has allowed them to build the size of following that most top flight

There’s always been a confusion as to the primary purpose of the pro teams and for that matter the Welsh districts and Irish province sides.

Do they exist to compete in their own right or are they development squads for their parent unions?

Expansion would dilute the talent playing in the Pro 14 but would probably be a good thing for the national team.

Technically we do now hve more pro teams, as well as the Super 6's, we have some sort of part ownership in Nice in France (think Federale level in France at the moment), and DC Old Glory in the MLS where we are sending players for development, but not in great numbers. Pity the tie up with London Scottish didn't work out as that could have been a good stepping stone to the pro teams, or even better if the made the premiership.

The Super 6 teams seem loaded with age grade internationals so hopefully helps giving them game time, but a 3rd Pro team in the Pro14 should be the goal whenever there is another expansion

Players wise we are pretty close to being ready for a third team. In positions like backrow and scrum half we are producing quality young players every year and there is a logjam in front of them meaning a 3rd team would be ideal.  At loosehead prop and fly half however we are already relying on foreign imports at pro level. Financially the SRU are unwilling and possibly unable to fund a 3rd pro team, especially given the support may not be there for them. It is getting to the stage however that a 3rd team is a necessity if we are to improve and hopefully it'll come in the next 5 years.
