If you've got possession of the ball, then you can't throw it up and head it forward for yourself or your teammate to regather. It's a knock on and / or intentional throw forward. Scrum or penalty. If you don't have possession of the ball there is nothing in the laws that prevents you from intentionally heading the ball forward. It's not a knock on or forward pass.
