Super Rugby this season has a rule where a ref can give an on-field yellow, and the TMO has the first 8 mins of the YC period to upgrade it to red if necessary.

It's an attempt to speed up the foul play process, and definitely won't lead to refs giving yellows for red card offences.

Oh, wait...

That’s a blatant red card without a replay.

It also only got upgraded to the 20 min red card, where a sub could then come on. Refs have the option of giving a permanent red, but the TMO review can only upgrade to the 20 minute one.

They've somehow managed to make something stupidly complicated even worse

How the hell did the referee think that was only a yellow?

It was about as obvious a red card as you could get.

What's even more bizarre is the roasters on that thread who didn't even think it was a yellow!

I don’t think it’s malicious - he just got his timing way off, but that’d have been a red back in the day where you could punch a guy in the face and knock him out and still only get a ticking off.

I know he's been knocked out but that looked like dreadful technique to me

*edit* which probably explains why he got knocked out

*further edit* obviously hope that it isn't serious

Aye, he made no attempt to drop to a proper tackle height and ran head first into Fagerson's shoulder. Definitely a self inflicted wound.

Been a good start from Glasgow.
