Curious here, but why has it zero relevance today? Is there a cut-off point for relevance or are you just creating an arbitrary line to support your tenuous argument against including Gilmour?

17 years, I don't think an arbitrary line is required, common sense will do.

Right, even if I concede this doesn't count, do you agree or disagree with the rest of that paragraph?

Yes, if injury forces the issue I'd rather see him given the chance ahead of Shinnie or Jack, particularly if McTominay is out.

Fletcher was among the best players we had, we called him up, used him and his age and experience was irrelevant. Everyone is in agreement that Gilmour is probably 5th in line for a starting midfield spot, so we all agree he's among the best we've got. If McGinn doesn't make it through injury and McTominay picks up a knock, do you have Gilmour stepping in or do you pick MacLean/Jack/Shinnie?

It was 17 years ago and has zero relevance to today.  You're as well using Dennis Law as an example as well.

Will he? I thought he was "bang average" for the U21s?

Not sure we can use Billy in the June friendlies, we'll need to get our best players together so that we can prepare for the qualifiers and Nations League games. Can't play him in the qualifiers or Nations League games, too important to throw in a guy we haven't used before. If we qualified I'm not sure I'd call up Gilmour, is a major tournament really the best place to throw in a young guy?

See how this circle of absolute pish can just keep regurgitating? It needs broken at some point, sooner is better than later.

I didn't say he was bang average, that was someone else.    As for the rest, just a strawman argument.

  4. 5 minutes ago, The Moonster said:

To be clear then, you don't think he should be called up to the senior squad because he won't learn anything, but you're happy with him continuing with the U21 squad because he'll learn...what exactly?

He'll help the team move towards the U21 Finals with a couple of good results, rather than warm the bench.

We have a minimum of 8 more Internationals to play this year, a combination of friendles in June, and then NL qualifiers,  plenty of opportunity to involve him if he continues to play first team football for Chelsea.

  5. 3 minutes ago, The Moonster said:

You'll need to explain that one I'm afraid.

You're using an example from 17 years ago to justify why Gilmour should be in the squad.  What relevance does 17 years ago have to the current situation?  As someone pointed out, our midfield that day included Gavin Rae and Graeme Alexander and was frankly woeful.  It has zero relevance.

  6. 23 minutes ago, The Moonster said:

I haven't said we need to throw him on because he might score a volley that takes us through, I'm saying we weren't scared to give a young guy breaking through at a top club a game before, so why now?

Darren Fletcher was 17 years ago, you may have a point of it was a couple of years back.

Am I right in thinking that the South of Scotland League and West Juniors will fit in underneath the new/mooted tier 6 West of Scotland League?

Because I take it that the West of Scotland League will cover the entire west and south region in the same way that the tier 6+ East of Scotland League (debatably) covers the entire east region, with the Highland League covering (albeit at tier 5+) the north region?

So promotion to the Lowland League will come about through winning the West and East regional tier 6s, rather than a mishmash of South, West and East and possibly West Junior leagues all promoting into the Lowland League (since we know that the South isn't all that strong, and the juniors may deliberately not meet licencing criteria causing blockages, etc).

So the West of Scotland League will really just be a glorified district league for west-central clubs?

And a club such as Threave will still face a large jump in costs from playing in the South of Scotland district league to the semi-national Lowland League.  I'd prefer to see a West of Scotland League as a regional feeder, sitting between district leagues (e.g. SoSFL) and the Lowland League.

And I've always felt that the Lowland League was just a sort of place holder - so a West of Scotland League would eventually take over from the Lowland League, for the West region, once there is enough depth of licenced clubs.

Having the South of Scotland district, a West of Scotland district and an East of Scotland region all feeding into a sub-national Lowland League looks like a guddle-fankle to me; there again, the best things in life seem to evolve naturally (nights out, marriages) rather than be planned rationally, so it may work out over time.

(And I'd still like to see a route in for juniors and amateurs, on merit, but I admit that may yet be some way off.)

2 posts in, and you certainly have created an impression 😂

The U21s have qualified before and it's meant bugger all for our prospects of the full team qualifying.

The last time the U21's "qualified" was in 1996, a final 4 tournament in Barcelona inc Spain, France and Italy after beating Hungary over 2 legs in the quarters.

Our previous 4 appearances were between 1980-1988.

Our decline at U21 level pre-dates our decline at senior level. Whether the two are linked is open to speculation.

I think we can expect further articles from Junior friendly journalists to appear in the media on Wednesday and Thursday seeking to boost the WRJFA position and highlight uncertainties about the LL proposals (when it should be the other way around).

Get Gordon Parks on the case 😂

The U21s isn't real football. He is surrounded by muck like Lewis Moore and Glenn Middleton, managed by a brain donor and he's watching the ball fly over his head every 30 seconds.

How many U21 games have you watched?

Sigh. You're better than this "seething" nonsense, Burnie.

I'm far from being a cautious dinosaur as you well know, and if this was a run-of-the-mill qualifier then I'd be all for us giving him a go off the bench or whatever.  I  think this game has come at the wrong time, it's win or bust.

Too many people have been sucked in by the hype.  We've been here before.

He's been average for the Scotland U21s though.

Throwing him into a playoff game with a bunch of guys he's never met never mind played with makes no sense when you have McGregor and Fleck to play that role. It would be a different equation if he was a match winner in the final third.

Correct.  I have watched almost all U21 games he has featured in.  He has undoubted talent, no question, but he has failed to materially influence the game.  The U21's haven't scored in three games.

He is also surrounded by world class players at Chelsea, drop him into a less that world class Scotland midfield, in a pressure cooker environment, win or bust game, one of the biggest in the last decade or more, with people expecting him to do something, and we expect what exactly. Is it a case of sink or swim?

He has 16/18 years ahead of him in a Scotland shirt if he continues like he has so far.  I asked a Chelsea ST holder (and Scotland regular) mate about him and his answer was "not yet".

This isn't a game to experiment.  That's even if it goes ahead, which I very much doubt it will.

  13. 2 minutes ago, The Moonster said:

Prime example of the timid, shitebag attitude too many hold. Frank Lampard knows him better than me or you and had absolutely no qualms dropping him into a "do or die" cup match with the best team in Europe. But apparently Scotland need to protect this wee 18 year old guy from the pressures of playing Israel at Hampden.

Lets just hope Steve Clarke sees sense and calls him up.

The hysteria is a sight to behold 😂

  14. Right decision, do or die play-offs not the sort of games you want to drop an 18 year old into with 2 senior starts IMO.

Come September if he is still starting for Chelsea then get him involved with the Nations League games, or even end of season friendlies in June (if they go ahead).

For evidence of what happens to a club that “stays behind” see Whitburn pre vs post Superleague.

It's not entirely true.   When Whitburn refused to join the new Superleague, they spent 2 or 3 seasons trying to get promoted into it, when they eventually did they finished second and third in consecutive seasons from memory, then mid table-ish, then the decade long decline began.

Not convinced the refusal to join Superleague has much to do with their eventual decline, apart from giving an insight into how their committee run the club and were asleep at the wheel during the decline.
