  1. The England cricket team were sort of likeable plucky hopeless losers when I started watching in the 90s so it was quite easy to take to them.

I can take or leave them now, wanted the kiwis to win when they were playing England earlier in the year but the Australian cricket team are invariably a dislikable bunch.

I think this is a pretty likeable team. Only really Stuart Broad that seems to be a dick.

The Aussies are c***s to a man though. Normally racist c***s at that.

  2. That's right.. England were so lucky they win the toss here.

    Oh.

And those Australian chaps certainly don't create wickets utterly designed to suit Mitchell Johnston. No siree.[/quote

Imagine laying pitches which suit your best bowlers. I wonder why India never try this. And pity Dale Steyn, bowling on all those dust bowl tracks.

The toss thing is a nonsense. But generally speaking, the team on top after the first inning comes out on top. Which is fair enough, really.

ETA it also takes more than a week to lay a pitch.

Yes, to ensure fair play I believe the Indians import wickets from Durham, that are juicy greentops. Doesn't suit their 9 spinners, but it just wouldn't be cricket otherwise.

Its just a shame England let the side down by creating these unfair wickets, and cunningly losing the toss on them.. To give the opposition captain first use of them.

Not to even mention the manipulation of the weather to aid swing bowling. Is there nothing these miscreants won't stoop to to get one over those lovely fair minded Antipodean gentleman?

  3. Cant take doctored pitches round the world with you.

You dont go from near record defeat to near record win in 10 days, you just get the luck and unluck of the toss of jiggered pitches.

That's right.. England were so lucky they win the toss here.

    Oh.

  4. Does anyone know if you can get refunds on train tickets? I'm thinking l will have to rethink my Saturday.

Great stuff from England though. I'm feeling an Aussie collapse, don't think England will have to bat again.

You can definitely get refunds on Scot rail tickets.. I've done that...

Not so sure about ones you've booked in advance.. Might be screwed there

  5. This is magnificent stuff..

Made even better by Geoffrey being in top trolling form.

Waiting for him to tell Jim Maxwell his auntie could take 10 off a Johnson over with a stick of rhubarb.

Broad out.. Still another 40 runs in this innings I fancy.

  6. Bedene is having a great run at the moment. It's amazing how close the rankings are from 50-100. Ward was is the 80's one week and now back into the 100's. Hopefully Ward and Edmund can get back into the top 100 in time for the US Open.

Its a real shame Bedene can't play Davis Cup.. He's an excellent player and would win more singles games than he'd lose I reckon.

  7. If you say it like that, maybe.

Asking someone if they are sure they want to keep playing is more tactful.

The people who work in my local Corals are decent. I've seen them approach guys who have asked for money to be loaded on the machines a few times in a row - "Look, are you sure you want to do this. Maybe you should take a break.."

The answer is of course always No, but they are genuinely people who hate seeing someone plough £500 in 10 minutes into a machine from their bank account, even if they do get a bonus.

I've seen other bookies where the staff virtually high five each other if someone walks out a grand down. Great for the shop income stats.

  8. It's a bit of a paradox. Betting shops can greatly enhance the lives of people, especially elderly people. Gives them structure in their day, people to meet, and keeps their brains active.

They tend not to bet much money though, so the bookmaker needs to prey on the vulnerable as well.

Good posts. Agree with all that.

I was in Betfred the other day to get their extra odds boost for the darts and saw they had Fred Done in their studio as the dogs were on mid morning.

He managed to get out with a straight face, turned to camera.. 'The last thing we want here is problem gamblers. Bet to yer pocket'

Eh, nice try Fred. The exact thing you do want is problem gamblers. Ideally you'd love a lot more of them. No one's buying the fake concern.

But in Stirling there are loads of old men that congregate in the bookies every day. Its warm..they get free coffee and tea.. Chat to the staff if they don't have buddies.. And put on their 2p lucky 15s.

This can only be paid for and tolerated of course because the guy who walks in from the street and drops 1300 quid into a FOBT in 15 mins then leaves.

Though actually here I've seen as many women in playing FOBTs than men. Often Asian women.

  9. I've not read any of the Dark Tower series either but I've never fancied it for some reason. On the petty side, I'm not sure I can buy into character names like Gunslinger etc. Am I truly missing out? Is it a must read?

Also, any good dark thrillers/chillers someone could recommend? Fed up of getting into a decent premise of a book only to find out it's another stale detective tale, looking for something a bit meatier.

Love my horrors too, any authors that might not be mainstream to keep an eye out for?

    Cheers in advance.

I liked the Dark Tower series. And I'm not a huge Stephen King fan. I don't like horrors much.

Try the Trilogy I mentioned above. Omens is first, Visions second and the new one out in August is Deceptions.

Its really difficult to describe. Sort of Gothic mystery/fantasy set in modern day America.
