  1. My experience of that time was similar - absolute prime of life, mid 20s, no ties. I was playing in a band at Teviot Union the night it happened. I was trying to extract myself from a relationship at the time which I did the next morning and it was all a bit surreal and hungover with the news. Didn’t realise that U2 concert around then - I was there too. Seahorses were shite considering Squires’ legendary status. I remember being raging about the Belarus game, was possibly David Hopkins’ sliding doors moment.
I've just realised Spearhead and Belly supported REM at Murrayfield in 1995. Also the Cranberries. Shirehorses was U2. Mixing the two nights up.

The massive lemon on a toothpick should have been the giveaway for U2!

  2. When I next go to Hampden to watch QP v Seaside I or II FC in front of 543 souls, will my now customary wee bottle of hand sanitiser in my right hip pocket survive the pat down by the aviricious Rock Steady thin yellow line?

(That I may never again go to Hampden to watch QP v Anybody is something I don't want to entertain yet.)

In that scenario, rather than giving up my slime, I'm pouring the entire bottle onto my paws. I'll have the most slippy hands that Hampden ever did see. (Other than Ray Clemence 1976.)

  3. I went to see Teenage Fanclub at the Jaffa Cake* in Edinburgh the night Diana died. I was, and I can't understate this enough, absolutely hungover to hell the next morning. I can't really remember that day distinctly, so I don't know when I clocked what had taken place. The funereal music suited my head.

During the week leading to the funeral I went to see U2 (supported by Spearhead, The Seahorses and blooming Belly!) at Murrayfield and there was a picture of the crowd on the Daily Mail in a "Scotland's shame: people enjoy life when Our Princess lies on a cold slab" theme. I could see myself looking absolutely not one bit ashamed.

I also slept through the funeral due to an enormous hangover. I think I had a ticket to the cancelled Belarus game at Pittodrie.

I bloody loved 1997. Every single weekend was a bit like the above, although very seldom did a Princess die overnight. Gigs every week, nights out galore, Scotland qualifying for World Cups.

I want to be that age again!!

    * I do remember that club being absolutely rammed and me sweating grotesquely. An amazing gig. Genuinely a top-10 ever type gig.

  4. Just as well got Mogwai tickets sold out in 50 minutes. Noticed that Jane Weaver is playing the next day so will have a few days in Glasgow.
Should have got an Hotel earlier as it is really expensive with quite a lot sold out. Not sure with the Covid that rooms are limited but hopefully a lot cheaper in the next month or two.
Hotels are booked solid due to climate conference. Pretty unfortunate clash.
  5. Mogwai tickets sorted.

RCH is OK for gigs. Wouldn't be my first pick of venues, but it is fine. My last gig was there also. 357 days ago!

Have tickets now for Arab Strap and Mogwai this Autumn, maybe up to about 60% confidence that they will actually happen.

Waiting for two gigs in May to be cancelled, already have two more rolled over into 2022. It's a bit of an industry keeping tabs on them all.

  6. Much worse than putting a pineapple or a banana near a savoury dish happened to me today.

I got a coffee on way home from school run. For reasons known only to God, they put a syrup into it. I think it was vanilla but I'm not giving it a second taste to confirm. Horrific. Really awful taste, who does this to their coffee willingly?

As it was a drive through coffee, I was ten miles away before I discovered this heinous act.

Quite a bad start to my day.

  7. Somebody here was asking about beers with these "Bros" bottle tops.

Found this bottle in Eskbank Trading, a new beer to me. It's a typical wheat beer, but a bit tart. Quite drinkable.

Eskbank Trading is also stocking Overtone. Four or five lines in, stocks were a wee bit low, so they clearly have their fans in Midlothian too.

Really good selection of beers in that shop. I had a look at Barry's Southside* on Twitter, and I reckon Eskbank Trading is stocking most of the same range. Really good selection of German beers.

Went in for a greetings card and came away with £40 of beer! Forgot to buy a stamp for said card. What a failure.

  8. "Livingston [blank blank blank];
    We prefer Meadowbank"

Still rates as one of my favourite terrace chants of all time. It had quite the zip to it!

First heard by me, sang with gusto by half a busload of Thistle fans at Hampden Park about 25 years ago. Think score was 3-2, can't quite remember to whom.

Was interspersed with a lot of Mr Blobby chants.

  9. Ultimately a rapidly filling bookings calendar for the property I go to vs. fixed school holidays didn't leave me with any option other than to rebook my week for 2022.

I'll get a trip over in 2021 at some point, but it will be a long weekend in the Machrie Hotel most likely as opposed to a long spell in a cottage on a beach.

  10. Islay Easter 2020 in the bin.
Islay Easter 2021 in the bin.
Rolled my booking over to Easter 2022.
    Only 409 days to go!

No doubt the ferry will be off that day due to "shan winds". Then the Calmacaroni will be off and as I finally step off the ferry and kiss the ground in the style of the Pope JP2 I'll get attacked by an angry flock of geese and have to be airlifted back to the mainland.

Still, something to look forward to I suppose.

  11. You know that feeling when you eventually get back into your office post lockdown and you see that a 262-bedroom hotel has been built just along the road in the period since you last visited?

This site was still being cleared and foundations laid when I was last in Edinburgh. Now it's ready to open for business. Unbelievable.

  12. First thing I want to do is take my Dad out for a curry and a pint of T.

Then I want to drive "home" to Islay, stand on Machir Bay, and probably have a wee greet just to process that finally we're through to the other end of this nightmare.

Looks like I'll be missing my trip to Islay in Easter (which in itself is rolled over from Easter 2020), but honestly don't care much about this Easter if there are much better days to come around the corner. Screenshot_20210222_113000_com.google.android.apps.photos.jpeg
