  1. This new album is superb. I'm nowhere close to objective around Mogwai, but I definitely think this is one of the best of their ten albums. I'd say in the top two or three. (My favourite will always be Young Team, forevermore, it was huge in my life.)

Had tickets to Manchester and Hydro shows over the weekend, really gutted to have missed them (also missed Strathpeffer back at start of pandemic).

The only positive I'm seeing here is with the EU visa issues, and an album ready to tour, Mogwai will surely be booking an enormous UK tour as soon as feasible.

I saw this on the BBC news website- mini Murrayfield is completed.
It has been mooted as a home for the MIGHTY City. Given the number of pillars in the stands it seems the SRU have gone for the cheap option rather than have cantilevered stands with no pillars. Meadowbank and most modern stands are cantilevered. Indeed when Walsall's Bescot Stadium was opened in the late 1980s looking similar to mini Murrayfield here it was slated by grounds guru Simon Inglis for being the cheap option rather than having 4 cantilevered stands.
Tl:dr : pillars good for hiding egg chasing from view, shite for watching football.
Quite pleased that my assiduous reading of Simon Inglis in my youth has left me with the knowledge that the first cantilever stand was constructed at Scunthorpe in the 1950s. A futuristic construction technology which will surely reach Murrayfield II given time.

Thanks also to plagiarising large chunks of Inglis, my P7 project on the grandstands of Archibald Leitch went down a storm.
  3. Like watching rugby through a fork was the most apt reply I read on twitter @BurgessHillRFC.

The Edinburgh rugby punters are quite easily taken in. One guy claiming the East Stand at Murrayfield (which dates from 80s) was built deliberately low to give the other three 90s stands a nicer view to the Castle.

  4. Met this guy David Bauckham at Gala when he flew up,  from Sussex I think,  to write this INCREDIBLY DETAILED ARTICLE. Think it was his first time in Scotland and he was only there for the stand.
Whitehill kind of pissed on their chips that day.
Just for a laugh I got one of him [emoji6]

    Your capital letters were warranted!

I won't claim to have read his full thesis, I'll save it for the next global pandemic, but I would take issue with the comment that the stand polarises opinion. It's fairly universally admired surely? To be either admired or at worst treated with indifference is hardly polarisation.

I've never heard somebody exclaim "oh my god, that looks just like Jarnac Court*, phone the Luftwaffe, immediately" on seeing it.

    * Niche Midlothian reference.
  5. Relating to NHS registrations from abroad - I have a pal who lives near Brisbane. He is still registered with his NHS Dentist and always makes a check-up appointment with them on Day 1 of his trips home, to give him time to make follow-up appointments if he needs any treatment. Not sure if he visits his GP or not whilst he's at it!

  6. Quite enjoyed this wee film. Guy takes day trip from Oban to Coll for £18. Worth a watch for the dolphins alone.

To be honest, even being able to see inside a Calmac ferry is thrilling when I've been landlocked for months.

He misses a wee trick, I suppose, talking about only getting two hours on Coll. You can do it on a Wednesday or a Saturday and get 8 hours on Coll (or 6 hours on Tiree). Even a bit longer (11 and 9) on a Saturday over the June to August timetable.

I imagine that longer day should be enough to have a good explore, certainly long enough to get to the beaches he mentions.

With the advantage of being able to have a pint in the (MV) Clansman on the way!

Another trip I've added to my growing list of "things to do if I ever get back into Tier 1 or 2".

  7. I'm starting to see clients vacating leases or negotiating reductions in rent. A lot more will be approaching break clauses. It will take a few years for existing leases to unwind, but in 2-3 years more or less every office space will have had some sort of break event / opportunity to consider options without penalty. This will clearly force the decision. Many will of course downsize once given the chance, but no doubt the cost of leasing smaller spaces has rocketed of late.

I love WFH, this is how I did my tea break yesterday. Joyous compared to going into a windowless staff room and making awkward small talk.

  8. Watching a random episode of The Big Match Revisited. Apropos of very little, Brian Moore (whose head looks uncannily like the London Paladium) pulls out Wattie White's top and cap from the 1908 game vs England. A 1-1 draw.

The same episode features Brighton (Mullery) v Palace (Venables) in front of 27,000 at the Goldstone; Leeds v Man Utd; George Best being sent off for Fulham (Moore; Marsh) at The Dell. A goalie having to change his top for the heinous crime of the top not being plain.

    It's dizzying. IMG_20210208_223505.jpegIMG_20210208_223601.jpeg

  9. Finally able to open this. Plur, 8% DIPA.

The smell on opening the can is incredible. Pineapple and lime. Tasting superb, definitely getting the tropical flavours, also a wee bit of pine nut. Would go down really well with a curry.

Would like to taste it against a Cromarty Man Overboard, an 8.8% DIPA, which is my high watermark for this style of beer.

Excellent beer. The P&B Overtone Fanclub has a new member!
