    No. Constantine had accepted Aethelstan as overlord/overking a good ten years before he invaded what was then Scotland. I guess you could view him as more of an emperor than a king. I suppose it depends how you define "king" but to say "he was in no sense ever king" is a bit strong. The feudal pecking order stopped at him, above the nominal king of the Scots.

    She made a cooked breakfast yesterday and managed to get bacon effluent burned on to the non-stick pan. If this wasn't impressive enough she soaked it in the sink (leaving it for me this morning) by placing the pan in the basin at 45 degrees with not enough water to reach the burnt bit.

    As far as chains of pubs go, Wetherspoons is about the best going. The competition is pub-themed readymeal cafes (Brewers Fayre, Harvester etc) or pretend irish pubs. It's just that chains by their nature eliminate the local character and variety of proper pubs, good and bad.

    Top Gun is a classic and you're all speaking shite. The spectacular aerial fight scenes with the guitar motif over the top, the bromance, the ott melodrama and the many quotable lines put it head and shoulders above Iron Eagle and (almost unbelievable that this needs said) Cocktail.

    Aethelstan has been called the first king of Britain. He had the kings of Alba, Strathclyde and Northumberland (covering modern mainland Scotland) wales and parts of Ireland give him fealty. Although if i remember rightly the scots king basically just said he would accept overlordship, then completely ignored it in practice. For a "british" monarchy, not a bad place to start the clock, i suppose.

    I have no issue with the mods. They have to make sure the forum content stays legal. It's the law and the pathetic mewling of the outraged order that's wrong.

    It's not sectarian and no it's not. It's a nickname for Rangers and their fans. It's not intended kindly. As a nominally protestant Scot from a family with strong masonic ties, it would be a bit weird for me to be prejudiced against "my own". The legislation is botched and leads to results that are counter to natural justice, like this nonsense.
