United after hiring Courts - "our plan is to develop youth and give them a chance, that's why we chose Tam"

Combined age of Uniteds first two signings under Courts - 97

    Hope your not an accountant!

    Mulgrew 35 years old

    Carson 33 years old.

    35 + 33 = 68, where's the extra 29 from.

Besides we have youth already at the club. No one ever said the entire squad would be filled with 16-21 year olds exclusively. The youth will be used and trusted as we have players who are  ready but we will be using experienced players where available that do not "block their gateway" to the team alongside them. Although you'll know that and just be looking to point score.

Bit of subtle trolling of Tam from Stuart today when they were discussing Micah Richards

"In my professional role on this show I've had to pretend to laugh at things which aren't funny.."

To be fair it could be a description of himself, as he starts laughing at something he's saying that is not remotely funny, and usually inaccurate.

Presumably you're trying to claim Stuart Armstrong as a "United academy product", despite the fact he was 17 when he joined?

Bit of a stretch, but your clubs been at that for a while now. Appere joined at 17 aswell yet is constantly marked as a youth product at United.

You're right of course, both these were signed as first team players and went straight into the first team squad, didn't go into youth teams, and United didn't have anything to do with any development at all.

As we both know that that is bollocks. Yes they were older when they signed, Armstrong had been at 2 clubs previously,  they then played for a couple of years with the youth development sides (or Academy). Its like joining a new secondary school in 4th year & staying on to 6th year, still had input from the new school in development as well has what was learnt previously.

No ones (that knows) claiming United developed them from scratch, but certainly finished and helped in development.

  4. Before I say my piece, I'm not saying I support this move,. BUT some of the comment have been fucking ridiculous! Also in no way am I comparing Courts with any other manager/coach past or present.

I have no idea of Tam Court's abilities so cannot say if he is any good or not (lets face neither do the vast majority commenting, but we're football fans and having a clue has never stopped us commenting before!). He is highly thought of though.

We need someone with experience is the cry and yes having an experienced head is good IF that head has the ability. I have no issue with an "unknown" being promoted if they have ability, after all you can't get experience if you don't do the job, you can't do the job if you don't have experience.

This is either going to be brilliant or a disaster, there will be no happy medium. We do have a few "reactionary" fans who subscribe to a lot of conspiracy theories about the running of the club and lets be honest Courts will get no time at all as the opinions of him have already been made, he is on a hiding to nothing. Also fans in general, especially in these days of forums and social media, seem to have no patience ( we are all guilty to some degrees of this) so if the first few weeks are not good the knives will really be out.

This is where I'm not comparing abilities, just making a point regarding the differences in fans "then & now". When Jim was appointed manager he had approximately 18 months grand total experience as a coach. We were mid table for next 4 years, a 4th place finish, 1 cup final & near relegated 1st season of the Premier, then the results of the hard work & his master plan really took off and the rest is history.

If the forums had been around then we'd have had a massive melt down then.

Courts has more coaching experience.than Jim did. Not saying he has and I doubt anyone would assume or expect anywhere near the ability of Jim. Just making the point that not everyone with no experience will be a disaster & that managerial/head coach appointments don't always go as predicted.

We have fans demanding that players with no experience should be in the team, but not a manager.

For me I would prefer someone with a track record I could look up and take confidence from, we aren't getting that, but we've had managers in the past with track records that we were probably happy with, but didn't work out.

    TL:DR

Not getting the pitchforks out like some, he'll get my support, hopefully he'll work out and grow into the job & it'll be viewed as a masterstroke. Would prefer a track record but again no guarantees. If it is going disasterously wrong I hope remedial action is taken quick enough.

One of the Twitter journalists was suggesting he asked to leave when told he would have no control over signings.

His replacement will be a "Head Coach" rather than a "Manager", and will be expected to just focus on tactics/training etc.

So who are we appointing DOF, as that role can't be left to Tony Asghar. As someone who can show the manager players to see who he's interested in yes, as someone choosing the players then no. Too close to the ridiculous situations of.ownera wanting x,y & z at the club and the poor bugger picking the team trying to figure out how the hell to get them all on the park together (much like Shankland, Clark & McNulty)

It's clear Mellon thought this league was easier than it is, when the season started United were on a good run, but as the season played out it was clear that without the early set of games they'd be fighting for relegation. Couple this with United being penniless and the league being stronger next season with the addition of Hearts (in place of Hamilton) it's obvious he's jumped ship.

Like Aberdeen, United will appoint the cheapest option possible.

    Pardon?

    That's nonsense.

First 10 we won 3, had one draw lost 6 including shipping 4 to Killie. (10pts)

Next ten won 3, picked up 5 draws lost 2.(14pts)

    Next 10 won 2, 4 draws lost 4 (10pts)

    Last 8 won 2, 3 draws lost 3 (9 pts)

Fairly consistent all season,so would be really interested in which early season saving games your refering to?

Both Dundee home games in 2019-20 were sell-outs, 14,108 in attendance for the 6-2 game and 14,007 for the 1-1 draw. Over 13,000 for Dundee derbies in both 2012-13 and 2014-15 as well. There was "only" 12,210 in Tannadice for the playoff against Thistle anyway, although that may have been before the Fair Play was built.

    So he's talking utter pish.

Not for the first time, and guaranteed not for the last.

The easy way you know Pressley is talking shite is whenever his lips are moving.

I admire the fact Dundee United get pretty top dollar for their players.

The fact they'll push the agenda they're playing loads and loads of players from their academy - probably in a hope they can get more top dollar. IMO.

The fans? No matter how well they're doing - or how poorly they're doing - any time a Dundee fan passes comment they go full on spit and rage and talk about their rivals (Dundee Football Club) for numerous pages. It's that addiction to the Dee that keeps the world turning. Again, IMO.

To be fair Mr Alli you'd be as well holding a mirror up to your own support, as you've allowed many United fans a near copy and paste about Dee fans.

Many many Dees seem to spend their time  posting about United more than their own club. It must be something that afflicts fans of rivals that some of them seem to worry and obsess over the "other team" rather than their own as you see the same fans from other 2 club cities.

For me I'll spend as much time thinking about Dundee as any other club, other than when Derby days are here or when discussing things with Dee friends. Others on both sides seem to be unable to do that

Richard Gordon reckons United haven't covered themselves in glory in  the Scottish Cup in the past 30 years despite the fact that outside the OF only Hearts have won it more in that period.

At least we've won it in the last 30 years, unlike his beloved Aberdeen

    In 30 years

    United 5 finals 2 wins

    Aberdeen 3 finals no wins.

If we haven't covered ourselves in glory, I'd hate to hear his, description of Aberdeen.

How on earth does Roger Mitchell still manage to get himself attention?

God knows. Got suckered into responding ages ago to some pish he was spouting. Been blocked ever since, the delicate flower. Wasn't even directly to him.

Boy was a clown in SPL days and is still a clown. Another of those that doesn't understand the tie to a club and that supporting a club isn't all about winning or playing Juventus, Barca, or whoever every other week.

They clearly don't cater for occasional listeners or fans who drive to/from games.

In the past, the hour before kick off would include team news, maybe an interview or two and then they'd go round the grounds for a preview. You'd listen in the car on the way to the game, find out your starting XI and maybe hear from your manager. Now? They talk endlessly about the Old Firm*, talk about the early kick off even if it was live on the other frequency and have an interview with one manager (usually Celtic, since the "ongoing situation") and you don't get to hear the teams at all or just before/after 3pm.

After the game, folk walk back to their cars. For some, this is a car park at the ground but for most this will be on-street parking. Years back, you'd get to the car at maybe 5pm and have the classifieds then each game would have a round up then you'd maybe get an interview or two before the old "Your call" or Off the Ball. Now if you get to the car at 5pm you've missed the scores and any round ups, but you'll have about 20 minutes about the Celtic or Rangers game, even if it was the early kick off. No chance in hell of getting any content on the lower leagues until Richard reads the scores later. There is no point listening to it on the way to or from a game.

And if you aren't on your way to a game and listen during the afternoon, you better hope you don't go to the loo or make a cuppa because they will often go for ages during the commentary game without mentioning the score. These are not difficult things to fix and is clearly an editorial decision. I'd say it's amateur but even hospital radio isn't this poor.

This for me is a big, big gripe. They simply do not care one iota about broadcasting a decent balanced informative sports program. I always put it on at 2 to listen to the build up on the way to the game. There is no point now. As you say its irrelevant Old Firm* chat, even if the same subject has been done to death during the week. The chat is mostly inane, full of irrelevance and views from folk who obviously haven't seen, or know anything of the issues or form of players. Its poor, and as you say even after an afternoon full of football its ignored. Any details of the matches and discussions is an after thought.

The commentary during games is certainly no where near the level of commentary of years gone by. It has been getting progressively worse over time, but to be fair on that point so has the tv commentary too.
