Homer Thompson
I need of a new laptop, no gaming just browsing, streaming and downloading films/music. Not the most knowledgeable about this stuff, wanting to spend less than £300 ideally. For that price I can get a bunch of laptops with 1TB HD or I have found one with 128 GB SSD, am I right in thinking I want to be getting the 128 GB SSD as this will run faster? Does 128GB SSD hold the same amount of data as 128GB HD? If so that isn't a lot for movies etc but I already have a 1TB external hard drive. This is the SSD one - http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/80JA0158UK-Lenovo-E50-70_1768889.html If anyone has any better ideas for that price range? Yes, the SSD will be faster. Yes, and SSH holds the same amount of data as the same sized HDD. And, no, 128Gb is not a lot, especially for a windows system. However, do you need to download movies etc? And, do you need a laptop? Sounds like a decent tablet might be better for what your usage, unless you want the bigger screen?

Cheers for the reply, I will need to torrent stuff not on Netflix, want it for iTunes/iPod and will need the screen as I'm not gonna be replacing my telly when it packs in/I move. Given that would you suggest the 128 GB SSD or pump for similar/slightly better processor/ram but with the 1TB HD?

Personally I would go for better processor & ram with the bigger HDD, the gains in speed from the SSD isnt going to be that noticable
Swarley
Porno virus. Trust me. Make sure you give him this news when the rest of the family are in the room KB. Christmas dinner would have been perfect. "So, have you fixed Dad's computer yet?", "Funny you should ask....."

Boostin' Kev
Apologies for the lack of terminology, hoping someone can help me with this. I used to be able to leave my laptop on overnight to do things like virus scans and full disk defrags. When I got to it in the morning I'd press a button and everything had been done. Lately it's shutting down overnight so when I start it in the morning Windows relaunches and the virus scan/defrag has hardly made any progress as a result. Not sure if this is the difference between my machine going into hibernation and shutting down but if anyone could give me a solution it'd be much appreciated.

Best thing is to just change your power settings so that it doesn't turn off at all when you leave it. Can't remember exactly where it is but if you find "power options", then go to "change plan settings".
Boostin' Kev
Cheers, just changed the settings to "Put to sleep - Never" when plugged in, I take it that's fine?

Just a bairn
Will the screen still go dark after a certain period of time but everything else continue to run? Yup, as long as you "Turn off display" set to a time.
Boostin' Kev
I did a full defrag of my hard drive last night and now the available space has dropped from 80GB to 30GB which is kind of the opposite of what I expected. Any advice?

Karpaty
Having issues watching youtube videos in full screen. It's just slow, the audio is fine but the picture just keeps breaking up. I've tried google searches, disabled ad block, cleared cache etc but nothing's working. Only seems to be YT, anything else is fine. Using firefox if that helps.
Mark Connolly
Getting regular "communication" issues between tv and surround sound, where the setting switches back to tv speaker at random. Have reset the connections, tv, home cinema etc, but still getting it - am i going to need a new telly?
Fife Saint
I often use my laptop to watch plex or nfl and run an hdmi into the telly. What's annoying is the TV sometimes takes up to 10 mins to mirror the laptop screen. You plug in the hdmi and the hdmi2 is selected but it flashes a blue 'no signal' screen before finally mirroring. Is there a setting I need to change or just live with it?

Usually like 'FN + F12' or something.

Any advice? Defragmentation shouldn't increase or decrease storage. It simply rearranges where files are stored to allow the CPU to access the information quicker and more efficiently. This seems strange.
