Twilight New Moon

Twilight Eclipse

Twilight Breaking Dawn part 1

Twilight Breaking Dawn part 2

A self centred teen joins up with pathetic vampires to be all angsty.

I appreciate that I'm not the target audience here.

Vampires should die in sunlight, not go all sparkly.

Werewolves should not be nice.

Biggest cop out for a climatic fight seen ever.

Some redeeming features. Decent characterisation in the first one, and an ok big fight in the third. The fourth is genuinely horrific for about ten minutes towards the end after being excruciatingly dull.

Count von count is genuinely scarier than Michael Sheen's big bad.

Oh, dear Lord, you poor thing. Daughter, I assume?

If you want a good Michael Sheen performance in a vampire film, Underworld is the place to go!  :thumsup2

Yep. She enjoyed it. I'm treating her to Snakes on a Plane for my choice.

Oh, that's unacceptable. Snakes on a Plane five times back-to-back, surely.

Can't help but feel that there might be a phrase she adopts to sum up her feelings by the third or fourth viewing.

112 Afraid -- This might be one of the best 4/10 movies I've seen this year. It's M3gan without the doll, basically, and it's a little unsettling that it stars John Cho who I last saw in Searching where he was using technology to track down his daughter, while here, a six year advancement in that technology is determined to destroy his family. I had a bit of fun with it, I suppose. I didn't hate it. But the start and end didn't make a huge amount of sense, and the bits in the middle didn't do an awful lot to get the pulse raised. There's a satisfying revenge porn subplot and the whole thing was quite funny in places, but I wish it had played on the humor a bit more because that seemed like a more sensible path through the nonsense. 4/10

Just seen this film earlier - Chris Weitz has a habit of films with interesting concepts that end up narratively being a bit of mess, American Dreamz springs to mind. 4/10 film I would agree

Terminator 40th anniversary 4k remaster tomorrow. Lord yes.

Ferrari. What a pile of shite. The trailer made me think was about a strong woman and a talented engineer putting their heads together to create a world beating car company, instead it was a psychodrama about a psychotic ruthless c**t and his pathetic women, sprinkled with corpses.

As a masochist just watched Lamborghini too, started ok with his dual fueled tractor then jumped decades to a likely fictional race with Enzo Ferrari and loads of domestic issues. Does nobody know how to make a decent biodrama anymore without turning it into a soap opera?

That was on the tv, but was already part of the way through when put it on. The first thing on the screen was a person lying on the ground cut in half. Don’t think I watched much more after that.

Let my movie watching slip a little around my birthday week...

71. Thelma

After The Great Escaper last year I'm really enjoying how greater representation of marginalised people has led to capers about octogenarian/nonagenarians breaking out and going on a personal mission. This was more of an outright comedy but still had the perfect amount of pathos to it; posed a lot of interesting questions about when the time is right to admit you need help just to get through the day to day, thereby giving up your independence and a big part of who you are as a person. It's consistently funny and June Squibb and Richard Roundtree were both excellent in the lead roles. A very good movie.

72. Kneecap

Love, love, love this. I previously called Hundreds of Beavers the funniest movie of the year, but this might top it for me. I laughed consistently from the very first scene. The three members of KNEECAP all played themselves and did a very good job, which points to really strong direction from Rich Peppiatt. The background of Irish sectarianism and the fight to have the indigenous language kept alive as a means of fighting oppression was a very powerful one. I found myself feeling a bit emotional at a couple of scenes with regards to this near the film's conclusion, though that could easily be down to the hangover I was experiencing while watching at the GFT. Yes, the film is a bit of a mess structurally, but the chaos adds to the story and kept it fresh for me. Besides, all the main threads that you have to pay attention to run through the story as expected, so it's not like you get lost. I've also been listening to their 2024 album since the film came out and think it's f*****g great. Can't wait to hear more from them.

73. Oddity

Low budget, Shudder-produced horror. I enjoyed the premise as a blind psychic sets out to find out what happened after her twin sister was brutally murdered. There are a number of very creepy scenes and some well-done jump-scares. Downsides were that the budget couldn't be stretched to make the ending more believable than it looked, while it also uncovers a fairly big plot hole from earlier in the film. Also, the final shot was a bit naff and featured the weakest actor in the entire movie. Still, it was a horror flick that didn't bore me and give me the chills on a good few occasions, so worth checking out.

Tremors (1990)

A comic-horror monster movie about subterranean snakes, featuring Kevin Bacon and Alex P. Keaton's Dad shouldn't work.

But it does.

"Tremors" is a fun, hilarious and thrilling classic.

Kevin Bacon only said yes to this movie as he was going through financial hard times, with a new wife and a baby. For years he resented it and said that doing it was the worst decision of his life.

Ever since he's learned to love it and he even cited it as the most fun he had on a set.

Turns out he was going through depression at the time of filming and he blamed "Tremors" for his ills, when in actual fact, "Tremors" may just have talked him off the cliff.

Brilliant movie.

Seen it dozens of times. It doesn't get old.

Like with all cult hits, they've made numerous sequels (I'm looking at you "The Lost Boys"), with every one failing to recapture the magic or charm of the original.

7.4/10

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - not great, not bad, some laughs, but a couple of the bigger set pieces at the end didn't land for me at all. Writers have got round the fact that one of the key characters from the first film can't be in it because he's a wrong 'un quite well.

I'd no idea about the Kevin Bacon/Tremors stuff, but I do remember wondering how he ended up in it at the time it came out. Very B-movie, and he was a fairly hot young property at the time.

That reminds me, I need to make a GIF of his "fascism is coming back" line from JFK.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - brilliant! More of the same from Michael Keaton and Catherine O’hara, well supported by Winona, Theroux, Ortega, Dafoe & Bellucci. 3 standout musical sections. Hilarious throughout and with great nods to various other movies. Good story, clearly not just a money making exercise. Elfman’s soundtrack actual enhanced from the original. Bob deserves an Oscar! An 8.5 from us in IMAX on Friday. Going to see it again on Sunday…

There was a Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian project that was stuck in development hell for decades. I thought Kevin Smith was kidding when he said he was offered it twenty-odd years ago, but it keeps coming up that other directors were in discussions with Warner Bros about making it too. Can't help but feel we've been short-changed, going by the trailers for the new one.

114 Beetlejuice Beetlejuice -- 51 summers on the planet and I watched the original for the first time last week, so you can tell that I have no real emotional attachment to this. And maybe that’s a problem. I thought the original was fine and this too is fine although maybe not quite AS fine. Everything feels ever so slightly less. I did wonder what Jeffrey Jones had done to not get an invite back and to piss everyone off so much and now I know, the movie’s treatment of him is even better. It maybe the best thing about the movie. Winona Rider’s one expression annoyed me after a while, Jenna Ortega was okay, Catherine O’Hara was underused, as was Monica Bellucci. Tim Burton’s visual palette is familiar in a pleasant way, Danny Elfman’s score delights, and the story feels more genuine sequel than cash grab. I kinda just wish I cared about it more, or about Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice that no doubt will follow in a couple of years. 6/10

115 The Thicket -- Aside from knowing it starred Juliette Lewis and Peter Dinklage, I knew absolutely nothing about this before going in, and I must admit when I realized -- not immediately -- that it was a western, my heart sank a bit. It's clearly been made for buttons, and the story of a brother tracking his sister, kidnapped by the villain who killed their grandfather, doesn't feel all that original but Lewis puts in a great shift as Cut Throat Bill and Dinklage is incredibly good as the sharpshooter paid to help. Elliott Lester hardly wastes a frame and the winter setting gives a stiff sense of urgency to everything. Placing it at a time when cars and motorbikes shared the roads with horses was a confusing decision, and there were a few moments where I felt I lost the thread a little, which is as likely to be my fault as any. Overall, for a random movie on a Sunday night, it did more than enough to win me over and seeing Juliette Lewis kick James Hetfield from Metallica in the guts did this no harm whatsoever. I doubt it'll get a wide release, but worth tracking down, just about. 7/10

Yeah. That's actually a great point. One that i hadn't considered.

For a generation, "Beetlejuice" was one of the movies that was in the visual mixtape of their childhood, so the nostalgia effect definitely plays a part.

Personally, I grew up with "Beetlejuice" (not literally) so I'm really looking forward to the sequel.

The nostalgia effect will also play in a part in the sequel to "The Goonies" that was recently greenlit.

Fright Night (1985)

When people offer opinions or make lists of Vampire movies, the title "The Lost Boys" inevitably pops up.

For me, though, the quintessential modern day (80s) take on the Vampire lore is, and will always be "Fright Night".

I did love "The Lost Boys". How could you not? The Coreys were never hotter (career wise), Keifer Sutherland was coolness personified and Jamie Gertz was gorgeous. (Plus there's the "Edgar" and "Alan" that I appreciate. They could've got it right with calling him "Allan", but no matter)

As a Vampire fan, as well as loving anything gothic and macabre, I dearly loved both movies growing up. I still love them. But for me, "Fright Night" just edges it.

If you haven't seen it, think of "Rear Window", but replace the neighbour with a Vampire.

It's surprisingly funny and satirical, it gently pokes fun at the horror genre, plus it is still scary. The sheer concept is terrifying.

The creator of "Fright Night" (Tom Holland. No... not the one who plays "Spider-Man") also created "Child's Play", so the creep factor was always going to dialled up to eleven.

Roddy McDowall gives a brilliant performance as the washed up "Van Helsing" type actor. Christopher Sarandon is smouldering and charmingly menacing as "Jerry Dandridge".

Both of the aforementioned seasoned actors carry the younger cast "William Ragsdale", "Amanda Bearse" and "Stephen Geoffreys" along for the ride.

It's a brilliant movie. I'll have to give it a perfect score, otherwise I wouldn't be able to live with myself.

10/10

Psst! Avoid the 2011 remake.

Did you about the Kevin Bacon game where ever actor is only six steps away from Kevin Bacon.

Apparently that is why he was hired for the EE adverts.

I remember when this site was first launched: https://oracleofbacon.org/

If they're all only six steps away from him at all times, how does he manage to get any filming done? I guess they must CGI out the rest of them from every scene.

74. Despicable Me 4

Forgot I'd watched this, which mostly tells you what you need to know. I liked the stuff with Baby Gru taking a while to warm to his father, while the villain(s) were decent enough without being particularly special. I prefer the Minions so this side of the franchise. I know that means they're going to be relegated to side characters in these tales but even for a DM film I felt they were either too marginalised, or what they were given wasn't that funny. It's fine. If you've got kids I imagine it'll keep them satisfied and it's watchable for adults, just not much more than that.

75. Hotel Rwanda

Expected big things from this. It's a conflict I've always had a curious (and probably morbid) fascination with, I think Don Cheadle is terrific and it is a film I've often spotted in the IMDB top 250 of all time. Given all that, I have to say I was disappointed. The 90s aesthetic and the sound was a big reason for that. It often felt too Hollywood-ised, which distracted from the impact of what should have been the most gripping and/or harrowing scenes. The entire film being in English is another example of that. It just didn't feel authentic. I don't want to be too hard on it as it was made in a different time and had it been shot in 2024 I know it would have looked and sounded very different, but it still surprises me it's so well revered all this time later. To be clear, I would say it was good but not great. Not as great as it should have been.

76. Alien: Romulus

I liked this more than I thought I would, but there's still a lot of issues with the film. May as well start of there. I didn't really give a toss about any of the characters barring the two main leads and the other protagonists, pretty much from the very start, just came across as barely, or cliche, written, though one of them does end up making a difference to the story, which I didn't see coming. The CGI use on one character in particular is appalling. It looks like a cut scene from a video game and took me out of the movie every single time they showed up. There was one acting performance as well which was pretty uninspired as well. And some of the fan service stuff, including one scene in particular, was eye-rolling.

As for the positives, for the most part it looked great. The set was very well designed, some of the shots in space were stunning and the editing worked well in some of the more thrilling scenes to keep the tension at a high. Both of the leads are good in their parts, especially David Jonsson and there are some pretty gnarly death scenes, even if one of them fell a bit flat due to aforementioned bad acting. The twist at the end was also something I didn't see coming. It was a big swing in this franchise but I think it just managed to pull it off.
