centralTon
I'm just watching Jamie and Jimmy's food fight on channel 4 and the episode had opened with a look at ales. Thought some of you might fancy a look. Is there a Channel 4+1? If so, it'll be on there at 9. Otherwise, it'll be on 4od I'd imagine. Just watched this too Mrs. M, not surprised the Belgians won. The Westmalle Trippel is one of the best beers I've ever tasted and the De Konick is superb too. Not tried the Bush (ooh err missus), but fancy it. Anyway, had a couple of pints of Arran Clyde Puffer earlier. Very nice, overtones of dark bitter chocolate. Now finishing off my case of Manchester Dark Ale, must get more.

I used to get that on draught at the Clockwork Beer Company in Cathcart. It is my favourite draught beer. Thanks for reminding me. Don't know if it is available in bottles.

Derek Patterson
How much is a case? Guessing they've got it in permanent now then?
centralTon
How much is a case? Guessing they've got it in permanent now then? I honestly can't remember Derek, there was loads of other shopping involved, but i think it was £2.09 a bottle. TBH, i wasn't too concerned about the price, I've bought beer from The Cave on Great Western Road at over £4 a bottle. For me, it's all about the taste. Had a super beer in Tallin last year in a microbrewery which cost £7, but totally worth it and would pay that again.
Derek Patterson
Aye I've paid that and more for good beer before. The Cave is a cracking place. Usually nip in after payday and get a good selection.
Monster
Anyone been to Hippo Beers across from the Kelvinside Art gallery yet? It's just opened in December by a friend of a friend, and they specialise in Scottish, German and Belgian ales. I'm desperate to find an excuse to get to the Weeg soon.

)typically
#18 Beer: J.W. Lees Manchester Star Ale Abv: 7.3% Style: Porter Aromas: Tangy hops, raisins, dark toffee malt, dark fruits, pipe tobacco, hint of spice, chocolate malts, actually slightly reminiscent of Old Jock though a tad lighter Taste: Dark chocolate but not bitter, roast chocolate malts, sweet and very smooth Overall: This was a darker one than I expected. Absolutely lovely stuff though. Very smooth for a higher Abv beer too. As Monster says it's a cracking Winter beer. Almost too easy to drink . I'll be back to Tesco Sainsburys to get a few more of these before they stop selling it again. 8.5/10 After reading so much about this beer on this thread I finally found a couple of bottles of this in Sainsburys East Kilbride today. I have drank one and will save the other for New Year. An excellent ale though I was taken aback by the ABV of 7.3%. Very drinkable, much more so than other strong ales I have tried such as Old Jock and McEwans Champion. I agree with the score of 8.5. I also bough this but am saving for New Year also, I think someone has reviewed it already but I cant be bothered looking through this thread again (this one apparently beat the Star Ale into second place at the Sainsburys beer awards):

Chuffed to hear that Sainsburys have Star in regular now. Will be getting a few purchased.
lanky_ffc
Inspired by the talk of mocha beers, are there any decent coffee-flavoured beers? I like an espresso so the stronger coffee-flavour, the better.

Not really a "coffee beer" as such in that it's not coffee infused or anything but it does have quite big coffee notes in it due to the dark roasted malts. Noticed you're up in the 'deen and I'm not really aware of any specialised beer shops up there but most Tesco have Dark Island. Its in a small dark bottle with a black label and espresso written on it in gold. Edit to add: Edited January 2, 2013 by Cammy35
mighty meadow
My first beer of the new year. First taste was an explosion of grapefruit and ended with a slight taste of lemon(ade). Very enjoyable and easy to drink. My Rating: 8/10 Edited January 4, 2013 by mighty meadow

)typically
Fuller's London Pride 9/10 A sweetish malty flavoured English Pale Ale well balanced with aromatic hops. Lovely stuff, similar in style to BrewDog's 5AM Saint but much less hoppy. 4.7% ABV
Derek Patterson
#39 Beer: M&S Cheshire Chocolate Porter (brewed for M&S by Robinsons) Abv: 6.0% Style: Porter (allegedly...) Aromas: Sweet milk chocolate, little bit of caramel, mild vanilla Taste: Much the same as the aromas, mild milk chocolate and some caramel, little bit of dark fruit, perhaps plum Overall: Random impulse purchase from M&S. Bit of an odd one. Bizzarely it's extremely pale for a porter and looks more akin to something like Hobgoblin. Nothing bad as such about it but it's pretty watery and doesn't stand up to other chocolate stouts/porters I've had. Wouldn't really recommend it when there's so many better beers in this style out there, the Tryst one in my previous review being a good example/ 6/10
