Reasons to be Cheerful

Submitted my PhD thesis today. Absolutely exhausted but feels brilliant to have wrapped it up inside 4 years. Also means I finished just in time ahead of moving down to London to start my new job, which will be my first full-time permanent post. I’ve worked full-time, and I’ve worked permanently but never both...

Going to be working in the civil service on the Fast Stream, firstly as a policy advisor, which should be fun. Looking forward to a break from academia for a few years and from specifically being immersed in law and legal stuff.

No offence, kid, but that kinda suggests one of the main problems with our Civil Service. Your first proper job, and you're an advisor on policy. Best of luck in the job and all, but you'll forgive me (should we ever face off in negotiations) for ripping you a new one with, y'know, experience and knowledge of my area of the CS gained over two and a bit decades. Question everything your immediate superior tells you, and listen to those below you (as close to the "coalface" as possible" - the people who actually do the job) before making any rash decisions and you should be fine.

Hope the thesis goes down well - congrats for completing it.

Had not one, but two, very attractive young ladies stick their finger up my erse.  Told me that they were looking for a bulging prostate, but we all secretly knew that they did it because they liked it.

My wife does that for me and I'm nowhere near 50yo....hope you got the all clear, Auld yin.

I suspect you’re jumping quite aggressively towards conclusions about how much influence and responsibility I’m going to be given.

The whole point of the Fast Stream is to take (mainly) graduates (but also internal applicants) and hot-house them in management level roles. If you’re objecting to that you’re probably also objecting to (almost) every private sector grad scheme to have existed.

For what it’s worth, the specific stuff I’ll be working on is at least an area in which I should have some degree of expertise, (though more but accident than design I suspect). I’m going to be working with the UK Government team that is overseeing the transfer of new welfare powers under the Scotland Act.

Thanks for the advice though. Taken on board.

Well, that's that fucked then.

Congratulations anyway, particularly on the PhD, I know how much of a grind that can be. You've been most flavours of political opinion in your time on here, so you should be well adapted to serving different political masters.

You've got the management level w**k-speak spot on already.  I predict big things for you.

Oh that's nothing. I'm looking forward to producing "innovative blueprints" and developing "network architecture" to "engage with stakeholders" and deliver "dynamic solutions" as part of an "agile" strategy.

I'll be disappointed if you don't use "let's put that in the ideas fridge and we'll snack on it later" when someone makes a suggestion.

When reading some of the materials about the Fast Stream they sent us I've felt like going full-on Mannion.

Mannion is probably my favourite TV character ever.

Congratulations on the thesis and job. Let me know if you ever want to know anything about living in London, I've been here seven years now and if you ever want any ideas on places to go, pubs and general stuff just ask.

Cheers! My flat's in Muswell Hill which is a wee bit out the way but the area is really nice. I'm looking forward to a complete change of scene. The amount of space you get for your money rent-wise though... :bairn

Yeah, it's a bit of a pisstake for property. Muswell Hill is a lovely area, couple of decent pubs and near to other areas as well. I'm sure you'll love it round there.
