Sounds fun, although I know less than nothing about football so there's no chance I would even bother turning up. Which other P+B alumni were in attendance?

Sport is probably my weakest subject in quizzing. Being a lifelong football fan, I assumed I knew a bit about it before I started doing pub quizzes, but no. I watch sport a lot, but retain very little information about it. Some people are just 'fact sponges', and absorb every available fact on the subjects that interest them. I'm not that type.

Similarly, music is also a weakness for me, not that I don't know anything about it, having worked in the business for most of my working life, but quizzes disproportionately focus on pop music, chart positions etc. and this is the one area of music I've never had much interest in.

The type of people who are attracted to quizzing tend to have encyclopaedic knowledge of sport and pop music, so the difficulty level of these subjects in quizzes is disproportionately high. I would struggle in any specialist quiz that was dedicated to sport or music.

History also tends to appeal to quizzers: dates / years like chart positions seem to particularly appeal to the quiz savant - anything that is reducible to a number or date can be more easily memorised and systemitised within a quizzer's mental database. Chemical elements and Academy Award winners, like orders of Presidents or winners of the F.A. Cup, also fit this pattern. Most, though not all, top quizzers tend to be 'list learners', people who actively work at remembering long lists of facts, and pop and sport are particularly reducible to this approach.

Ironically I got into quizzing because I have a pretty crap memory, I'm always forgetting people's names. I don't remember (or care) about chart positions and years of hit singles. I coudn't tell you who won the FA Cup in 1997, even though I most likely watched the game. I find list learning incredibly dull, so tend it avoid it. I do, however, have quite a wide range of interests and find reading about most subjects interesting. In contrast to the depth of knowledge that most quizzers display in sport and pop music, there are huge areas that the typical quizzer is weak on. I tend to specialise in these areas.

Art is a good example. The 'canon' of pub quiz art questions is a fairly limited one, and tends to be confined to a small number of artists. Knowing a (very) little bit about art immediately made me my team's 'Art and culture specialist.' There are other big areas of knowledge that most quizzers, even decent ones, know very little about. If I could be bothered learning a bit more about Fashion and Design, I could quickly establish it as a speciality, as the sum total of the average quizzer's fashion knowledge could be comfortably accommodated on one tiny piece of paper in very large print.

The area I'm reading up on most at the moment is science. Quizzers tend to be split into two camps: those that can 'do science' and this who can't. People who can 'do science' tend not to be able to 'do art and culture', and vice-versa. I've always been in the A&C group. The very best quizzers can do both, so to make meaningful progress I have to get better at science, which is what I am trying to do, by reading more about the subject. Luckily I am finding it fairly interesting.

I was really asking on behalf of my aunt who lives in Canada and would love to watch stuff on the BBC. But as for getting her to install Hola add-ins for Chrome - I'm as well asking her to invent an alternative to oxygen.

Cheers Slippery ... I'll check it out when I get home.

Premier League - 17th Season (although I think we had a few seasons prior) ... There are 2 names in contention for the top prize who have never won it before. Alang1993 has had another pish start to the season. He really does blow hot and cold!

Down at the grass roots, the yo-yo teams are there or thereabouts. I'm never getting promoted again, and welcome to irvine_buddie who must now realise that it's harder to perform well in the quiz when you're actually part of the league.

Evening all, it's time for the Diddly Dee Jamjar Trophy classified results show.

There were 4 scores not received so a couple people have received walkovers into the next round [emoji3]
First up
Marr1 v Tynieness v MSU
Tynie the only player to submit a score here so a walkover, though he did post a magnificent 6+6 which would have been difficult to beat.
Eednud v Gman1985 v Arabdownunder
Last months losing finalist Eednud posted a decent 6+3 which was better than Gmans 5+3. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to beat Arabs 6+6.
DeeJ v Bullyweevilla v Welshbairn
BWV posted a 3+4 which meant no progression for him. 1 point decided it between DeeJ and Welshie with DeeJ taking it 5+5 to 5+4.
Cowden0 v Bigbo10
Another close match though Cowden0 managed an extra point in both halves and took it 5+5 to 4+4
Dieharddoonhamer v AlanG 1993
Diehard rather failed to turn up form this one scoring 1+4 though AlanG posted a good 6+5
Deeman v Cardinal Richelieu
Another tight one here. Even first half both scoring 6. One point swung it second half with Cardy nicking it by 3 to 2.
Audaces Fortuna Juvat v LeedsSaint
Even first half with both scoring 4. Nothing even about the second half though as AFJ took it 6 to 2
Supermik v Ross
Easy win for Supermik here as Ross failed to post a score. Worth noting that Supermik managed a 5+5
Whiterosekillie v Swarley
Close first half though WRK stormed away in the second taking it 6+6 to 5+3
Gkneil v The_Kincardine
Close one this. Even first half 4-4. Second half continued the same though Kincy nicked it 5-4 in the second
SlipperyP v Pleslie
Slippery ended up behind after the first half and couldn't make it up second as Pleslie took it 6+6 to 4+6
Eckthearab v Dee62 v IrvineBuddie
The newbie struggled to get to grips and manage a mere 2+3. Dee62 took the first half but Eck stole it in the second by a point. Eck winning 3+6 to 5+3
WillieA v Jacksgranda
Not Willies best showing and Jacksgranda manages to get past the first round by 4+4 to 2+3
Blackislekillie v Jagfox99
Even first half finishing 5-5. Close second half but Blackislekillie nicked it 5+4
LiviLion v Scotfree
Another close one with only a point separating the teams.
4-4 first half but Scotfree seals it 5-4 in the second.
Peasy23 v FrankieS
Walkover for Peasy though he managed a respectable!E 4+3

So no replays meaning the 16 teams through to the second round are
Tynieness
Arabdownunder
DeeJ
Cowden0
AlanG 1993
Cardinal Richelieu
Audaces Fortuna Juvat
Supermik
Whiterosekillie
The_Kincardine
Pleslie
Eckthearab
Jacksgranda
Peasy23
Blackislekillie
Scotfree

Draw will be made on Wednesday.

Bugger, must have missed the link for this. Apologies. Keeping on top of three online quiz leagues daily, plus a couple of pub quizzes a week, and a couple of other monthly quiz events, is obviously too much for me to handle!
