Frankie S
On 01/04/2017 at 12:02, Cardinal Richelieu said: Sounds fun, although I know less than nothing about football so there's no chance I would even bother turning up. Which other P+B alumni were in attendance? Sport is probably my weakest subject in quizzing. Being a lifelong football fan, I assumed I knew a bit about it before I started doing pub quizzes, but no. I watch sport a lot, but retain very little information about it. Some people are just 'fact sponges', and absorb every available fact on the subjects that interest them. I'm not that type. Similarly, music is also a weakness for me, not that I don't know anything about it, having worked in the business for most of my working life, but quizzes disproportionately focus on pop music, chart positions etc. and this is the one area of music I've never had much interest in. The type of people who are attracted to quizzing tend to have encyclopaedic knowledge of sport and pop music, so the difficulty level of these subjects in quizzes is disproportionately high. I would struggle in any specialist quiz that was dedicated to sport or music. History also tends to appeal to quizzers: dates / years like chart positions seem to particularly appeal to the quiz savant - anything that is reducible to a number or date can be more easily memorised and systemitised within a quizzer's mental database. Chemical elements and Academy Award winners, like orders of Presidents or winners of the F.A. Cup, also fit this pattern. Most, though not all, top quizzers tend to be 'list learners', people who actively work at remembering long lists of facts, and pop and sport are particularly reducible to this approach. Ironically I got into quizzing because I have a pretty crap memory, I'm always forgetting people's names. I don't remember (or care) about chart positions and years of hit singles. I coudn't tell you who won the FA Cup in 1997, even though I most likely watched the game. I find list learning incredibly dull, so tend it avoid it. I do, however, have quite a wide range of interests and find reading about most subjects interesting. In contrast to the depth of knowledge that most quizzers display in sport and pop music, there are huge areas that the typical quizzer is weak on. I tend to specialise in these areas. Art is a good example. The 'canon' of pub quiz art questions is a fairly limited one, and tends to be confined to a small number of artists. Knowing a (very) little bit about art immediately made me my team's 'Art and culture specialist.' There are other big areas of knowledge that most quizzers, even decent ones, know very little about. If I could be bothered learning a bit more about Fashion and Design, I could quickly establish it as a speciality, as the sum total of the average quizzer's fashion knowledge could be comfortably accommodated on one tiny piece of paper in very large print. The area I'm reading up on most at the moment is science. Quizzers tend to be split into two camps: those that can 'do science' and this who can't. People who can 'do science' tend not to be able to 'do art and culture', and vice-versa. I've always been in the A&C group. The very best quizzers can do both, so to make meaningful progress I have to get better at science, which is what I am trying to do, by reading more about the subject. Luckily I am finding it fairly interesting. Edited April 3, 2017 by Frankie S
