Is O’Neill the guy to be throwing that kind of money at? I have my doubts.

Me, too. I think he's passed his sell by date as a club manager.

Chairman, CEO, DOF and now a "technical director"?

Is someone playing FM up there?

The Technical Director is required because the DOF is out of his depth (always was going to be through no fault of his own, Cormack made a bad choice there). An excellent administrator but not as up to speed on the football side of the club.

At least the club has provided us with an update on the current situation. Neil Warnock's abrupt departure has put the club in a difficult position; he could have waited another week until we were ready to appoint a new manager. Unless it was the influence of the players that led to his departure.

"Technical Director to support the Director of Football" sounds like a pointless extra wage.

Also reading between the lines - I think there's only one candidate for the manager position and he's currently in a job.

So 75yo retiree took on a job that was much harder and much less fun than he expected, far from his home, and decided "f**k this". Not that surprising in hindsight, but I also sympathise with the board who obviously expected to get a bit more from him. Left us a little unprepared but we'll be OK with Leven in the meantime.

Dons twitter overreaction to the statement is predictable, there's nothing the club can do right now that won't have people raging.

Interesting that it's a German company doing the review - hopefully the restructure will be a step towards the German model. Think it's good that a Technical Director will be brought in and hopefully the first team manager candidates fit the profile that will work together with that role. Obviously they don't want to fire Gunn but I imagine his role will be (and probably has been) more admin-y than a real DoF.

Now go and get a good, forward-thinking coach please 🙏

I think I got overly caught up in the typically over-the-top and ill-informed Sportsound reaction to Warnock leaving - more fool me. Because of the circus around Warnock and Cormack's poor media skills, it all looks a bit worse than it is, really, and this morning's statement is actually fairly reassuring. What has actually happened?

  • Club sacks underperforming and underqualified manager (it's on them for hiring him in the first place, of course)
  • Club recognises structural flaws; hires well-regarded firm to audit all that, and decides to take time over next managerial appointment
  • A vastly experienced, media-friendly interim is appointed who specialises in short-term gigs
  • That appointment doesn't work out, so club decides to finalise new manager sooner than originally planned
  • Interim decides to chuck it a couple of weeks early (which seems to be what's happened), which isn't necessarily the club's fault

There's not really anything daft going on there, when broken down like that. I expect the DoF will be 'supported' for a few months before being re-assigned or let go, or I hope that's the case. I've talked myself down from calling us an 'exploding clown car' in another thread on Saturday.

All of the above is, of course, null and void if Neil Lennon is appointed. 🫠

Ask yourself why he would leave early.

And your last great manager was?

Given our last major domestic honour was in 2013 beating the Famous Aberdeen at Pittodrie on the way, it would have to be Danny Lennon.

We beat three of the four largest teams in the country (Aberdeen, Celtic and Hearts) in the last 3 games on the way to win that trophy.

Your club has an operating budget 4 or 5 times what ours is. You last won a major 10 years ago.

Your route to that 2014 trophy was a first round penalty shootout against Alloa, Falkirk, Motherwell, St Johnstone and Inverness.

Quite the opposite of what we achieved.

We accept we are a wee diddy team punching above our weight.

Fan owned without the need for a wealthy owner.

"It's a bit chilly up there."

His 'bit of fun' ended up with him being a figure of fun, and not this much-loved figurehead by fans and media alike that he perhaps hoped.  He probably thought it would be a lot easier than it is.  Whatever incentives he was on probably depended on a now unattainable league position and/or Scottish Cup progression.

Only the latter part is slightly confusing, as the ludicrous experimental line-ups have stabilised into something approaching a solid competent side in the last couple of matches.

You took a fair bit out of your day to type that up.

League positions in 2013/ 2014 -  Motherwell 2nd, St Johnstone 6th, Inverness 5th

League positions in 2012/ 2013 -  Aberdeen 8th, Celtic 1st, Hearts 10th

What's your point caller?

Nope. About the same time it took for St Mirren to snatch 3 points from Warnocks Aberdeen recently. 😜

Enjoy your day Joey.

P&J reporting that he chucked it.

Can't really blame him, and those who were outraged at him being here and calling him everything also can't complaint at him leaving us in the lurch.

Anyhow, unless Cormack has undertaken a period of self reflection then he will know exactly who wants, and no sham interview prawcess will sway him from his preferred candidate.

I am relatively encouraged by the statement, but also a bit sceptical of how much decision-making authority Cormack will actually be willing to concede in reality. It is a tentative step in the right direction, though, at least theoretically.

^^^ Warnock chucked it because he learned big Dave was well advanced in actively lining up the next mug behind the scenes, meaning Warnock was toast, no matter the results, including leading Aberdeen to a cup semi final and possibly being very unfortunate not to have taken anything at St Mirren after a mostly solid performance away to a team with an excellent home record.

Pull the other one Aberdeen FC.
