J_Stewart
Messi's not even the best Lionel, never mind footballer. "He's good, but could Messi tapdance on a cold Tuesday night at Butlins" type post, IMO.

Peppino Impastato
Maradona at his best was the best there's ever been. People who disagree just haven't seen him. Go and watch a ten minute video.

energyzone
Messi is OK but if you asked him to shield his back 4 for the majority of a European Cup semi final like Lampard did then he'd be hopeless.

J_Stewart
I enjoy how nobody ever responds to Peppino on this section of the board because he's clearly mental. It's reassuring.
8MileBU
Maradona at his best was the best there's ever been. People who disagree just haven't seen him. Go and watch a ten minute video. I did. Despite the lack of cocaine abuse and a fat bloke shooting reporters with an air-gun, the Messi nutmeg compilation pissed all over it. -

RandomGuy.
I'm a flat earth believer I'm afraid, I'm just not willing to put players of this era ahead of Maradonna given that they don't need to spend 90 minutes worrying about avoiding leg breakers, playing with glorified beach balls doesn't exactly help either. Aye. But Maradona played against defenders who'd spent the night before downing pints, while Messi plays against defenders who get shown ten minute compilations on the best way to stop him.

If you think defenders of today are better than defenders of Maradona's era you are basically a loonie.

They are certainly far, far better athletes which helps hugely with being able to defend.
lanky_ffc
Folk need to get away from this nostalgic idea that 'football was better back in my day' and realise that the standard now is far better due to a greater emphasis on conditioning and nutrition and a better understanding of tactics.
Ira Gaines
They're not thuggish hackers though. So obviously it was better back in the day. The former point is a total myth of course.
Barry Ferguson's Hat
Tbf, I'm usually finished with a 10 minute video long before the end.
Salvo Montalbano
While athleticism and conditioning have improved immeasurably since Maradona's day, to suggest that defenders were poor, we're sinking pints the night before, had no tactical awareness and the like is clearly nonsense. He wasn't playing against cloggers in England, he was playing in Spain and Italy where the level of professionalism and defensive awareness (in Serie A at least) was far beyond anything England had to offer for decades. Maradona was quick, strong, agile, had incredible ball control and dragged two middling teams to Championships they've never managed to win since with both Napoli and Argentina. While Messi is similar he is fortunate enough to play with arguably the best team in the history of football. There's no way he'd be able to drag a mid table side to the title or inspire Argentina to win the World Cup. Not than I'm arguing that Messi isn't the greatest - but to discount Maradona with some of the comments on this thread is just bizarre.
