RiG
The small large child inside me is loving this weather right now. Heavy rain, rumbling thunder and flashes of sheet lightning out at Riccarton.
WILLIEA
Well! That peel of thunder was rather loud. Really dark with the odd brilliant flash of sheet lightning in Glasgow
Rugster
Am I right in thinking that if you count from when you see lightning, to when you hear thunder, that is how far away in miles approximately the eye of the storm is? Or is that an urban myth?
RiG
Close but not quite. Apparently you need to divide the number of seconds between thunder and lightning by 5 (if you want the distance in miles) or 3 (if you want it in km). http://science.howstuffworks.com/nature/climate-weather/storms/question182.htm Edited July 20, 2016 by RiG

So when I nearly shat myself this morning (actually I did, but I was on the toilet at the time) the storm was a fifth closer than I thought it was. You learn something every day.

The Master
Pitch black at 9.30am in July. That wasn't in the slightest bit disconcerting.

Smurph
Clearing up in Glasgow now, rain seems to have stopped and the rain radar suggests that's it**. Shame I missed the most of it sleeping, woke up with some thunder but didn't seen any lightning this morning. Was a bit better last night and a few bits of sheet lightning but nothing as adverse as I'd like it to be. **edit- nah, it's not. FlyerTon posted it as it was at 07:45. Looking like another hour of rain but no lightning Edited July 20, 2016 by Smurph
