What jobs/careers are out there

Cheers.

I did consider a Masters actually, this time in something I'm actually interested in. The problem is I've already racked up a fuckload of debt since first year in 2009, I kind of just want to get on with making money now rather than losing more of it. My first job was shite but at least I had £3000 in the bank which is more than enough for an 18 year old living at home, now I have minus £3000 and a huge student loan of top of that. Also, if I did a Masters I'd be nearly 27 when I come out of it.

Might just become a junkie.

What about an MSc in Oil & Gas or some such boring subject in a sector with oodles of cash. Then churn out glossy marketing brochures for an oil company. Remember to buy a suit and die inside, just a little.

On a more positive note, there are loads of MSc courses. Do you still get course fees paid for some through the SAAS? There used to be a list of each university, showing how many funded places they had for each course. I'd be surprised if this isn't still the case. Pick one of them.

On a windmill in the North Sea is your ideal location.

Well i see a future in renewables and its something that will only grow over time. I don't feel particularly strongly about oil, its just a rip off business and bad for the planet

Can't wait for the new revolutionary replacement for plastics and the stuff many wind turbine blades are made from.

That said, perhaps we should be saving oil if we want to have electrical goods etc for the considerable future. Transport is the main problem for oil, not power generation which costs a fortune, hence a rarity these days.I hope in 50 years that people look back on our transport habits like we look back on the Edwardians who heated everything with coal.

I actually started out doing Electrical & Electronic Engineering at uni, having grand ideas of designing turbines etc at the time 'Silicon Glen' was going to be the next big thing. Changing course will probably be the thing that changed my life for good imo, now applying my favourite interest directly into work.

You can usually tell the ones who went into oil and gas just for the money though. They're most often the ones most miserable / shite at their job.

Im doing Civils, i got into it to get into renewables but would be open to anything else really and would be grateful for a job no matter what! One that dint involve shitty building work anyway! i prefer it to the likes of electronics as that is too niggly for me and i don't really have much interest in computing - narrowed my courses down to renewable systems and civils and made my mind up that i was going back to college within a short time so had to make up my mind or wait a year, i can't say i have regretted it at all but the renewable and sustainable aspects appeal to me more than Roads/bridges/Transportation aspects. There is a course at Napier that specialises in Timber engineering but that doesnt really appeal to me, although you can get scholarships for it so f**k knows! I am quite interested in infrastructure work/ service providing/ water supply as well there are so many routes i can go down its quite exciting really.

Sitting in a pishy office bored of my job thinking I need to get out of here and do something different.

I have goals for the future but a few years doing something different really appeals to me. Maybe working outside or at least away from the mundane office lifestyle.

I have an honours degree in Social Science (waste of time sob) and years of office experience.

Anyone on here do anything interesting?

I need inspiration P & B!

The MOD police are recruiting if that's any use to you. I worked alongside them in my time at Faslane and they seem to have it quite good. Starting wage is around £22k I think.

Not exactly for me just now as I'm trying to get offshore/back to sea and joining MOD plod would mean a hefty pay cut as well.

There will be a manager's job coming up in the Ibrox area of Glasgow shorty.

The wages are fantastic.

Actually, you'll be expected to work for beans and a place to kip. They'll be paying off the incumbent for years.

I'm quite fortunate with my job. Apart from my FM job - which only really operates for a couple of months a year anyway - I used to work in an office doing marketing but found it torturously dull. I left with the idea of striking out on my own and doing marketing for small businesses, but while I was starting that I ended up getting involved in teaching exercise classes.

Over time I did more of that and less of marketing and now I practically do no marketing.

Basically I get paid to do my hobby and make mid 20ks to work a 15 hour week.

Unfortunately, I know I can't do that forever.

Having a job on Football Manager doesn't count you know.

...so I should think about taking it off my CV? :(

No wonder he doesn't post much; can't imagine the furious messages he must get every Autumn when the latest Junior wonderkid doesn't end up with the stats of Pele :P

I've recently taken the Oil and Gas route - a big drop in wages initially is offset by the reasonably secure position and the excellent time off,

I've got some options going forward but I've absolutely no plans to go offshore.

How did you get into it and what qualifications did you get?
