Steven Gerrard

He was a great player at his peak, everything you'd want in your main man really.

He must be winding down his career with big regrets over what he could have achieved in the game, though. Should be sitting with 5 or 6 league medals for sure.

Depends what you want from your career though, he could have moved and won a few Premier League medals at Chelsea and meant very little to the fans, but he stayed and became a club legend where he is adored by the fans. It's probably 50/50. If he'd won the Premier League last year then I don't think he would have had regrets about not leaving, they also could have won the league in 2009 (I think) when Macheda scored against Villa, that goal probably cost them the title that year.

There's a lot to learn from Micheal Owen - who was in a similar situation - who left to achieve better things, didn't really win very much after leaving (other than his time at Man Utd but he hardly contributed) and is pretty much disliked by everyone.

The media arselicking towards him is getting a bit embarrassing.

He wasn't even the best Liverpool or England midfielder of his generation.

He was that best Liverpool midfielder of his generation, albeit with very little competition.

Scholes and Lampard were both far better than him though.

People forget how good Gerrard was at his peak and remember him for the past few years where he has been a shadow of his former self

Scholes > Lampard > Beckham> Gerrard

All English too. Looking back it really was an incredible group they had. Cole/Terry/Ferdinand/Neville behind that and Owen/Rooney infront.

Not really incredible. Terry, Ferdinand and Neville bang average.

A comparitive 10 year timescale would see far more talent from France, Italy, Netherlands or Spain. England in the 00s about on a par with Portugal or Sweden or Germany talent wise.

Maybe not England but who was better at Liverpool? Igor Biscan?

Got to agree with this - Liverpool have never really replaced Alonso, and as a result Gerrard has never really consistently hit the same level he did with Alonso beside him.

Would he get in an all-time Liverpool midfield ahead of Alonso and Souness?

I feel that its Mascherano that has never been replaced by Liverpool. Alonso was a wonderful player but he wouldn't have played in that CL Final in 2005 if it wasn't for Gerrard scoring that goal against Olympiakos.

Lampard is 2 years older than Gerrard and is still good enough for Manchester City. Gerrard isn't good enough for a mid-table Liverpool.

Gerrard could do the exact same at Man City that Lampard is doing which is coming off the bench with 20 minutes or so left in a game.
