The Terrible Journalism & Tom English Thread

Also the overuse of the word 'insist'. Why are players/managers always insisting things? Can they not write 'is of the opinion that', 'believes', 'assert', 'claim' 'vow' etc etc - some imagination in the text would be nice.

Today

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton insists the club's hierarchy made a "massive mistake" by keeping Deila as manager.

Lee McCulloch insists he has given no thought to the possibility of being given the Kilmarnock manager's job on a permanent basis. McCulloch takes charge of the side for the Scottish Cup tie with Rangers after the resignation of Gary Locke. (Daily Mail)

Partick Thistle manager Alan Archibald insists Steven Lawless will not be distracted by talk of a possible move to Dundee United. (Scottish Sun)

Centre Matt Scott says some of his team-mates were so fired up to face England when they last visited Murrayfield in 2014 they were moved to tears, before surrendering to a 20-0 defeat. Scott insists the Scots will not let emotion hinder their performance on Saturday. (The National)

Graham Gano insists the pressure of performing in front of a worldwide audience will not affect him when he takes the field for Super Bowl 50. The Scottish kicker will line up for Carolina Panthers against the Denver Broncos in San Francisco on Sunday. (Daily Record)

Clearly not isolated to football!

Footballers are always 'adamant' or insisting something. It's better Toy Department copy than them not actually giving a shit.

As I have asked before, how is it that managers are 'unveiled'?

Footballers are always 'adamant'

Apart from Vinnie Jones. He wanted to be more Henry Rollins.

Bad journalism is bad enough, but when a football club attempts to exert control on the media and newspaper management backs down and gives in to their bullying, it really is a sad state of affairs.

Where this piece falls down is in its failure to address why this happens, and why it is so unique to Scotland, and the answer lies in Rangers being part of an institutionalised recreational sectarianism that is the bane of Scotland ingrained almost from birth, with one bloc pretending to be part of some master race for fuckwits and the other some poor oppressed perma-victimhood striving against it.

Despite all that has come to pass, the Herald and Evening Times group still tugs the forelock to their Ibrox masters because that is what is "expected" of them if you "kick with a certain foot" & like joining secret gangs that like frilly aprons & funny handshakes, as if British journalism hadn't said goodbye to all that crap four decades ago.

Not a new one, but I've just been reminded of all the journalists who wailed that Sky would have no interest in broadcasting Scottish football if there was no Rangers in the league, and that the Old Firm game was the only thing worth broadcasting.

I bring this up because there is currently live netball on Sky Sports 3.

Craigkillie is right.

It says "the first non-league team", which is universally accepted as meaning "outwith SPFL" - and "outwith EPL & EFL" in England.
