Don't buy the angle that UKIP don't have a purpose anymore. Little Englanders absolutely seething at the immigration figures today, lots of distrust of how Brexit will be implemented, no shortage of once-safe Labour seats in the Midlands/North completely up for grabs - a competent far right party could sweep up in England just now.

Unfortunately for them, Farage is off to coin it in and the rest of the party are complete thickos to a man.

Hard to judge anything at this time of the night, but some early indications seem to say the Tories will win Copeland with reasonable comfort whilst Labour will just about hang on in Stoke.

This could all of course be bullshit!

The significance of a Tory victory in Copeland cannot be overstated. History tells us that ruling parties almost never gain seats in midterm by-elections. The last time a governing party made a gain was Mitcham and Morden in 1982.

However, as elections analyst Matt Singh has pointed out, this result took place in unusual circumstances, as it was triggered by a Labour MP resigning and then defecting to the Social Democrat Party in order to re-stand.

As Singh explains in his blog, the last time a ruling party made a mid-term gain without any unusual political factors playing a part was in 1878 — nearly 150 years ago. A Conservative victory in Copeland tonight would be historic.

As is often the case with by-election nights, every journalist at the Copeland count will tell you something different. Some saying Labour are ahead and looking good, but others saying that loads of rural ballot boxes are still to arrive...and it's probably not difficult to guess which party will benefit from those.

Looks tight on both counts. Labour to hold both for me, might be on a knife edge, but to keep UKIP out in Stoke would be a decent effort.
Copeland can't vote Tory can they!?

Word online seems to be that votes on the day in Copeland were pretty much 50/50, but there's 9,000 postal votes and they've broke for the Tories.

A town like Whitehaven to vote Tory, would be mental, wouldn't it!?

Whitehaven itself may have went Labour, but I think Copeland encompasses quite a bit of rural areas around it does it not?

I think it's interesting that UKIP chucked everything at this seat, whilst the Tories neglected this nearly entirely until a couple of days ago to focus on Copeland, and they still barely scrapped ahead in 2nd. More than anything, it shows that UKIP are going to have a very difficult time breaking through in these seats.

Copeland, result:
CON: 44.3% (+8.5)
LAB: 37.3% (-4.9)
LDEM: 7.2% (+3.8)
UKIP: 6.5% (-9.0)
IND: 2.6% (+2.6)
GRN: 1.7% (-1.3)

An absolutely historic result, this. Governing parties should not be gaining seats from the opposition.

Considering their chairman's a fat racist b*****d & their candidate Nick Delves is pro-fox hunting, I wouldn't paint this as any victory over the far right, especially with them losing a lot of what little members they have left over their cosying up to UKIP.

Also the far more racist Barbera Fielding - who was arrested during the campaign for her leaflets - was 10 votes clear of the closet racists.

For those of you interested in what this old bat believes in - & she makes the late unlamented Dowager Lady Jane Birdwood look like a buckled leftie - fill yer boots with the platform of her Abolish Magna Carta Reinstate Monarchy party:

She also has a reputation as a vexatious litigant, having amongst other matters taken Signal Radio to court for invasion of privacy, harassment, altering her heartbeat, coercion by psychological broadcasting & the loss of her entire life.
