A solid 2/3rd rounder at most at the slams. He’s always been a clay court specialist. Was a set and a break up against Rafa in 2018 French Open before the rains opened up, in the colder damp conditions Rafa turned it around and won in four. Pretty sure he’s made a final of a clay masters and made a couple of hard court slam QFs in the last couple of years. Rafa had his most difficult match against him in the semi final last year. Should be more comfortable tomorrow. The spin, depth and height elevation of the ball from Tsitsipas is almost Rafa like. Medvedev really gets stuck tactically on the natural surfaces, makes lots of different adjustments and just gets lost. You can see why he hates clay.
jaggyness
Djokovic looking far more comfortable tonight taking the first set fairly easily.

Musetti looks like something special though. Think we will be seeing a lot more of him. I may be misremembering, but is it Djokovic who holds the record for the number of opponents who have retired against him? I remember it being a ridiculously high number for whoever it is who holds the record for that stat. During the years Murray was at his peak I can remember watching Djokovic make mince meat of some opponents in the ATP events and early rounds of the majors. I tried to Google that to see if I was correct but can’t find anything, but what I did see is a stat saying Federer has never once retired from a match in his 20 year career. That’s absolutely insane, you would think with the amount of matches he has played in that time he would have went over on his ankle or fell and bashed his knee at least once. I go over on my ankle about once a week when I’m playing golf, and Federer hasn’t done it at all in 20 years worth of tennis matches. The Derry
I'm sure statistically a few years back Schwartzmann was the best returner on the tour. That was during peak Andy Murray times as well.
Lex
Novak and Rafa both through to the semis in four sets then. Both got tougher tests than expected, Rafa lost his first set at the French since 2019 or something. Berretini served well but Novak ground him down in the end.Winner of their semi plays Tsitsipas or Zverev in the final. Going to be yet another major for the old guard I think.
jaggyness
In news away from the French open, battle of the Brits between Katie Boulter and Heather Watson later in Nottingham. Fully expect Boulter to win despite the lower ranking and experience.
Oscar P
I’ve always assumed that Roland Garros was a famous French tennis player from years ago. Not so. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_Garros_(aviator)

Not so. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_Garros_(aviator) They used to ask the players each year if they knew who Roland Garros was. I had just assumed he was one of the four musketeers with Henri Lacoste that won the Davis Cup in the 20s for France. Del Potro answered that he was a famous aviator and that game was stopped
Loki
Tsitsipas makes it through to his first final. Youngest finalist since Murray in Australia in 2010. Only saw the last set, but looked a lot more accomplished. He will have a better chance against Djokovic. The French Open schedulists must be the worst of the four slams. The people who have paid tickets for the second semi will not see it finish unless it’s a blowout.

David W
I'm kind of hoping they postpone the Euros again so I can keep watching this. Such an entertaining first set and a half. There will be absolute riots at curfew time.
Loki
2 hrs 40 in and it’s one set a piece 3-3 in the third. 65-63 in overall points to Nadal.

Jim McLean's Ghost
I saw they lifted covid curfew for the crowd here otherwise they were risking some disorder as the fans would have refused to leave.

Lex
Masterclass from both players. After Rafa went 5-0 up in the first seemed like another blowout similar to last year was on the cards.Novak getting some consolation games at the end of that set before losing it 6-3 was the turning point. Nadal was fantastic from then on but Djokovic was just better. The two greatest players of all time IMO.
jaggyness
The standard in sets 2,3 and 4 was just outrageous. Two legends of the sport absolutely bringing their best.
