Supreme Court to issue their verdict in about 30 minutes time.

I'm pretty sure they'll take the easy way out and say that it's not for them to make judgements on political decisions, but there might be a gentle rap on the knuckles for Boris and say "Don't do it again"

Thomas Cook bosses gave themselves £50,000,000 before company collapse

Capitalism is broken.

Edit to add:

Hedge funds set to make £200m from failure of Thomas Cook

Yeah, I should have deleted that post!
I tell you what though, I don't think anyone, anywhere in the meeja was expecting this verdict either.

Absolutely. I was thinking the SC would rule against the Gov. but wasn’t expecting a unanimous quashing.

Imagine Corbyn suggesting that.  The Daily Mail would bring out a special edition with a big black border.

Compare and contrast.

"Free itself" is doing a lot of work here. Surely the creditors will have a claim on the planes?

The government giving money to keep a company operating which stupidly ran up almost two billion pounds of debt would be madness. Everyone would know that they are on the verge of insolvency and no one would book with them for 2020 so they would go under anyway.

The top 1% of flyers take 18% of all flights.

The top 10% take 50% of all flights.

Limiting air travel is going to be a huge issue in years to come. It's been funny watching private jet using celebrities support Greta Thunberg and seeing people like Owen Jones and Ash Sarkar bang on about a Green New Deal despite being frequent flyers.

It's worth recalling that VAT doesn't apply to jet fuel and realising that this is because it's overwhelmingly consumed by the richest in society.

It clearly is.

There is no comparison between carbon and coffee. I'm guessing your view on air travel will be the same as your views on inheritance tax, talk a good game until it's something that actually effects your lifestyle?

If only there was a tax on air travel.  One where the more your flew, the more your paid.  They could call it something like Air Passenger Duty or similar.

In terms of punching up or punching down I'd say it's the exact opposite.

I work with folk who fly abroad at least three times a year and fair do's but in terms of tackling climate change this is as big as getting folk to drive more efficiently (or less).

Grim advert at the bottom of this thread for me.

I mean, I'm under the impression that the adverts reflect what you've been looking at online, so I expect gambling websites and weird fetish porn stuff. I don't know what the f**k this is.
