MEADOWXI
The speed of change is the thing, Berlin Wall coming down could have been predicted, that in a matter of weeks and months the whole Eastern Bloc disappeared, The mass protests in Romania leading to Ceaușescu and his wife getting put against a wall and shot was probably more a shock than the Berlin Wall. Phones - one pro and one con. Pro - . Am old enough to remember my mum having to book a phone call with British Telecom to her mother in Canada and the line being awful, I can now carry and have phoned my son on a mobile when he was in Australia, perfect line. Con. When you went out you had to be on time is the downside to phones. If you were late tough you couldn't get in touch. Phones have made it acceptable to be late and the reason you running late is that you buggering about on Facebook or P&B or something on your phone while listening to Deezer or whatever. Cheap travel through competition for what was a monopoly of flag carrier airlines being too big and out of date, backed by travel agents that made the mysteries of booking and costs into an industry. The old airlines missed the moment when we stopped wanting to pay 100quid extra for a breakfast on the shuttle to London, it only an hour and McDonalds offer the same plastic shit for a fiver at either end. The internet and sites like Trivago mean we can all see flight costs and hotel costs and not have a slice added on for the pleasure of wasting an afternoon looking at the back of a computer as some travel agent looks at the screen, then shows you what she looking at in a fucking brochure from the shelf. The internet that brought Trivago and Tripadviser and laterooms and all the others is great. Please note Michael O'Leary remains a c**t despite his influence on the changes in the European airline industry.

Fullerene
Berlin Wall coming down could have been predicted, that in a matter of weeks and months the whole Eastern Bloc disappeared, If you read "The Collapse" by Mary Elise Sarotte, it reveals that the wall came down almost by accident It came down in the middle of the night with no organisation at all - and could easily have been violent (1989 was the same year as Tiananmen Square as well as Ceaușescu) At the same time that people were climbing on the wall, East German soldiers were using water cannons to get them off. The West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl was visiting Poland at the time ("Dancing at the wrong wedding" they say) and had to quickly fly to Bonn and then Berlin to get there. There is also a talk on YouTube about this

TheLip69
That there would be fewer kids kicking a ball about in the streets and parks. When I was a kid you played in whatever spare ground you could find. On a Sunday you used to see four or five different games going on in the same park. Every street had a team you could play against.

dee_62
Growing up in the 70s and 80s, while you could watch things like "Tomorrows world" and various sci-fi programmes, I never once considered that smartphones, tablets and the internet would evolve as quickly and as widely as they have. The speed of global communications via social networks and 24 hour news programmes is way beyond anything I could have imagined, bearing in mind that UK TV consisted of 3 channels and used to closedown overnight - with breakfast TV only starting in the early/mid 80s. I also remember me and my pal phoning Dens Park constantly over a 2-3 day period to try and find out who was going to be the new Dundee Manager to replace Davie White. Couldn't wait for the papers the next day. Also, growing up meant going out to watch live football matches otherwise, you'd never really know how your team was doing (unless you were one of the 2 selected highlights games chosen by Sportscene or Scotsport over a weekend) . Also, if a game was live on the telly - it was a big one and not to be missed - nowadays there's so much football on the telly it's lost its appeal somewhat. f**k it, I feel like I'm becoming a grumpy old git now! On the bit I have bolded, I also never thought there would be that much live football on TV that I would eventually become immune to the effects. It's so readily accessible at almost any time of any day that I don't even check half the time now, whereas 20 years ago if there was a live game on at any time I would watch it. The same goes for pornography. I've watched that much that often thanks to the growth of the internet that I barely bother these days.

Ross.
I kind of miss hunting around for free porn when it was mainly PPV. Made it so much better when you struck gold. Finding a 4 minute video and waiting an absolute age for it to download while hoping no one needed to use the phone anytime soon was an important lesson in patience to a 14 year old me. forever_blue
Everything. Up until the early sixties life hadn't basically changed for hundreds of years. The last twenty years especially, changes have been beyond anything most people could have imagined I don't know how you can say not much changed between 1860s and 1960s , the change in technology even between both world wars was huge
