Firhill_Basin
The Jagzone interview was very concerning, IMO. We're looking at loan signings, plenty of trialists being looked at, we are financially hamstrung because of the financial issues of playing in a lower league and also because we need to shift Barton, Storey and Keown. It was said we were/are looking at the Scottish market for financial reasons as opposed to down south. It was also mentioned the likes of Fitzpatrick will feature in the first team plans and some more bleating of excuses about lack of time to build a squad because of the play-offs as well as money. I'm not sure he knows what he is doing. Also didn't the club release a statement day or two after the Livingston game and it was said that the manager would be given a competitve budget in order to achive promotion? We're miles behind in terms of quality and depth at the moment. Either thats false or the manager is making a mess of things, or maybe even both. Right now we have three fucking goalkeepers, thats a horrendous use of the budget for starters, IMO.

I must agree ,as you say the Board promised a competitve budget ,we got rid of over a dozen players,Doolan and Erskine took a big drop in wages, and yet we seem to behind other teams money wise

To be fair most of our signings from down south have been utter dross and to think we have spent more on them - in that sense not too concerning we are looking at players from Scottish leagues and if they are cheaper even better- though we have still signed McGinty from English lower leagues which kind of negates his claim that we can only sign guys from Scottish teams

I get where you're coming from, but I'm inclined to go with other posters that have said the plan is probably to loan Sneddon out though. Even if he's kept on to play in the reserves and give a bit of depth for if/when one of the other two are unavailable, he'll not be on megabux. I suspect we've been able to finalise our goalkeepers for the coming season because it's probably the easiest position to find a free agent in and means we can focus on negotiating elsewhere. It's one less headache to have that position covered at this point, anyway. Do think it's very worrying that we're making noises about being so hamstrung by having Barton, Keown and Storey still at the club; I'd have thought that freeing wages from the likes of Osman, Cerny and Lawless + agreeing wage cuts with those remaining would give us enough wriggle room to fill the squad up pretty quickly but that's not really been the case. Could be a case that we're finding ourselves outbid on most of the players we've identified as targets hence the talk shifting to going into the loan market, which should be a bit more straightforward to negotiate from our end. Firhill_Basin
If we're looking at the Scottish market then have we been sitting with our finger up our arse? We've signed two players from Scotland and its almost July. Ross County have signed eight. ETA: we've actually signed three, forgot our backup goalie. Public menace
Could not not be a case of putting word out there that funds are tight, as a negotiating ploy to any potential targets.
cilitbang
An obvious signing to me would be Gavin Reilly after being released from St.Mirren and doing well in the league previously. Yet, now County seem to think they’re getting him whilst we’re going through trialists and will end up having to rely on Doolan and Erskine again...

Armand 2
The impact on the budget that Barton, Storey and Keown will be having is being slightly underappreciated - if all moved on, it's not overestimating to say that it would allow us to bring in up to 6 players. We've got to assume these guys are happy to stay and run their contracts down (which they're well entitled to do). Competitive budget or not, you can't just summon dosh like that given the reductions across the board. We've addressed our defence with two relatively solid signings, on paper at least, both of whom have scope to develop further. We also moved quickly to plug an unexpected Cerny-shaped gap in the squad with a tried and tested quality keeper. We would appear to be in discussions about adding Craig Slater who played on Saturday and seems to fit the bill as to what we're looking for. We have a fit Stuart Bannigan who looked lively on Saturday by all accounts and is like a (very good) new signing. If folk actually looked at our squad rather than count signings at others, they'd realise we're making (albeit slow but) steady progress. Yes, it would be nice to have another few on board but there's absolutely no question we've been in the running for one or two others who have went elsewhere or stayed where they are. We don't hold the competitive advantage of being Premier League anymore and folk appear to have forgotten that we're one of about 8 or 9 very similarly resourced clubs, all shopping for the same players. Supplementing with loans is a sensible move but not one that will satisfy an increasingly baying mob. Oli Shaw and/or Scott Wright for example could certainly be classed as "quality" loan signings but neither will be allowed to leave much before early August. We trialled a right back on Saturday so somebody like the boy Godinho at Hearts might be on the radar.

Granted, not every signing has been a revelation but show me a manager at our level who has had a signing ratio of 80% hits and 20% misses? The problem you have with good players in the lower leagues in Scotland is that everybody is aware of them and that drives the price up when they move. There is a certain striker who plays for a Premiership team who earns more than any individual has for Partick Thistle in the last five years. What did this striker do before arriving at the Premiership club? He hit a barrelload in Scottish League One and the timing just fell perfectly for the move. With the exception of Dundee United and Ross County, who both offered Freddie Frans wages that we could only dream of, we're competing against everyone else in the division for the same group of players.

Rednyella
Aye probably not but. just wondering what wages we can only dream of are ? And how much the 3 guys we are trying to get rid of are on. I would think they are on somewhere between 2-3k a week. If we can off load them all that frees up potentially 8-10k a week which would go a mile in the championship. To give Frans 7k a week is the reason why United have debt issues. That’s sevco style crazy to pay a player that in tier 2 of Scotland. There is no way we could offer that finishing top 6 in Premiership.
