Motherwell FC - A Thread For All Seasons

Recommended Posts

I was in P&B Jail for a week and a lot has happened.

Think everyone will know my opinion on the Dickie debacle.

We've had a brilliant start to the season. I'm all for it. There is something I am unsure of in the team. I can't even really figure it out but I am there to shout and cheer so I will.

I am looking to Stamatelopoulos getting a good run.

We’re doing great so it’s seems churlish to split hairs but Robinson is a major weak link for me.

While we’re doing well the argument doesn’t seem as important but his missing the target completely again, like he did when clean through v Ross County, yesterday, from not far out at seems to sum up his prowess.

When folk were on here lauding over SOD for his first 8/10 this year vs Hearts (and I appreciate many were tongue in cheek) then I'm prepared to give a 22 year old striker a bit of leeway for his worst game this since joining.

Not saying he's going to score every week from January but if he gets one goal he's equalled what Theo achieved by Boxing Day therefore he's earned a degree of patience.

It would also be worth noting that normally, when you're not trying to fatten up a Christmas Turkey, your primary striker is also your penalty taker. Throw in the extra we get some oomph and come alive in the last 15' of a game, when he's normally been replaced.

I think Robinson does a job in the same way that Curtis Main did a job when the young boys were running riot.  If nothing else he softens up the defence for the finishers to come on and ehm finish the game.

I think this is the new 'wait and see' view the vast majority of the support will hold.

Our start has been excellent, you can't argue against it. But setting up to start the way we do leads very much to Alexander comparisons, in the sense of praised when it works but little credit in the bank when it stops.

The United game became a legendary FP night but we were 30 seconds from being booed off at halftime. Had Hibs scored one of four or five great opportunities before we'd managed a shot, how different would yesterday have been etc.

We're averaging a set piece goal per game in the league...that simply cannot continue.

And the midfield there's no point in repeating the concerns.

So while we've been brilliant in terms of results, it's incredibly fragile.

On the plus side, solid gets you a long, long way in the league and the combination of our results and others means the top six is well and truly possible. Hearts will get better and slow down those chasing us while going by recent years, just over 30 points from the next 26 will have us very competitive for the split - a rate which isn't ridiculous even with an expected slow down.

And for the paranoid among us, utter relegation form of 23 points from the next 31 may still be enough to keep us up (though I wouldn't like to test this!).

Yeah, that's it. Good post.

Mika with a hat trick for Champions league level Sturm Graz against Champions league level RB Salzburg.

It was definitely a mistake that he ended up at us...

I think it's clear Motherwell were the springboard to launch yet another young star into the stratosphere. I mean, who'd even heard of him before he got his big chance at Fir Park?

On our start to the season. When we had that huge list of injuries, on top of the less than sexy group stage phase of the cup, I was hoping we could scrape as many points as we could over the 8-10 weeks where we were short of numbers, just so we could stay out of danger.

We've managed to put together a great string of results and are in a great position that we can build on. The performances have been weird, but our knack of being in the vast majority of games until the last minute, and generally finishing stronger, isn't an accident. You have to give SK the credit for that.  I preferred the Mcghee style of blowing teams away early, but I'll take anything that gets us points.

We're going to have a bad run, but getting points when we're not playing well, and having the set piece threat should hopefully help us grind out results,  especially when the other teams pick up form.

The injured guys look like they'll be bench players at this point (ofher than paton), but this should hopefully mean that we're just tweaking things in January.

Aye. Probably no real need for many signings, if any, in January if we can get everyone fit and available. Hopefully we dont get any more serious injuries for the rest of the season. Feels like we have had our fair share already.

In our league - a good start counts for a lot and we've seen it enough over the years. Get a wee cushion of points early on and even just reverting to average form (rather than going off a cliff) means that it's tough for enough teams to catch you to put you in the bottom half. St Mirren last year were a great example of that.

I don't think we're quite in that position yet BTW - although a home win against Dundee and we're getting there.

A fantastic header from Stuparevic yesterday. Thought overall he had a good first start for us. It's clear he isn't 100% match sharp but when he is he'll be a real asset to our squad. Clearly likes the ball being played into feet, rather than over the top or to his head, which was clear as he grew into the game when we started to acrually play football. Also seemed very one footed but that shouldn't be a huge issue overall. Excited to see what more he brings this season.https://x.com/BrysonAnalysis/status/1842653412879483165?t=48C8phzhOwm0tT1TXNqFYg&s=19

Obviously once you get him fit for us we will probably recall him! 😂😂😂

One underrated aspect of coming out the blocks flying is how relatively zen it makes me about results elsewhere in the league.

Dundee 2-0 up against Killie? Brilliant- decent distance between ourselves and the bottom of the league and it's only October. Killie come back 3-2? Perfect- seven points clear of a top six competitor who we play next.
