I'll second that, certainly better for the players and fans than playing a bunch of meaningless friendlies and the clubs are making a few extra pound out of it. A step in the right direction for Scottish football.

I will third that.  Seemingly £30k for the qualifiers of each group.

Changes in the starting eleven told for Saints in the first half as the team struggled to get any rhythm going. We only really looked dangerous at set pieces but equally looked fairly comfortable before succumbing to what was a very well worked goal. We didn't manage to get properly reorganised from Jackson's switch of play and with Scobbie dragged wide, he capitalised on the ball in to head home.

Thomson had been too rigid in his play and Dyer had him sussed so he was the obvious player to sacrifice at half-time and within seconds of restart, Alston had come infield to link play around the box, something that had been absent for the first 45 minutes but set the tone for the second period.

Brechin defended heroically but Saints still manufactured chances and efforts on goal, although couldn't find a way past Smith. Swanson and Cummins improved us again and the equaliser was deserved, with Cummins knocking down a Paton cross from which Kane couldn't miss.

Thought we might have gone on to win the game but to their credit, Brechin had a go as well, when the ball was in play anyway. Nobody can be confident of Saints winning a shootout and so it transpired. Disappointing to not even force Smith into a save though.

Saturday had a bit of a friendly vibe to it but there was none of that tonight, with both teams fully committed. Thought the ref could have been stronger but don't think that should overshadow a good Brechin defensive display and a decent second half for Saints.

Seeding could now be an issue for us but tonight was the relevant game with regards to that, Saturday is about ensuring we top the group.

Under-estimated Brechin and paid the price for it. Be surprised if Thomson features to any great degree for us again tbh.

A nice wake up call before the league begins.

It's hard to say that Wright didn't underestimate Brechin but equally, he needed to get minutes into some of the guys he put out tonight.

That's not a moan about the competition, which I like, but it's not practical to play the same side in every game at this stage of the season. He maybe made a change too many with no Swanson or MacLean though.

I agree the likes of Paton, Coulson and Kane needed minutes. But to change over half the line up was too much. Muzz or Paton for Millar, Coulson for Swanson and Kane for MacLean was all that was needed.

Unfortunately we have not much choice in the matter.  Basically the same team week in week out.

But I feel your pain man , We got beat fae fuckin Elgin !

At least we never got beat, let's pump these Stirling mutants at the weekend.

On paper you should win but football has a knack off throwing up some surprise results. Just hope you under estimate us on Saturday and we sneak a win, would that not be great from the Stirling mutants [emoji120]

Would be wonderful if we managed to beat the farmers on their own patch.

Imagine it little Stirling going through over St Johnstone and the wee team from Falkirk, would be glorious

What would make it even funnier is if we beat St Johnstone and Brechin beat Falkirk

Well done Brechin, put in a good performance and a good result for you.  The time wasting from half-time onwards was massively frustrating, but up against a full time team in the cup I suppose it's going to happen, and it's up to us not to fall behind or let it become a factor.

far too laid back and slack in the first half, better second half.  One up front for 70 minutes against 5 at the back was poor and I thought should have been changed earlier.  Obviously Coulston and Muzz were to get up and support as much as possible, but the whole first half Kane was crowded out and isolated. We put a lot of crosses/ high balls into Kane that he didn't get a lot of joy out of, which Cummins might have been able to get something out of.

The Brechin keeper made a few good saves, Gareth Rodgers had a good game (as did the other two centre backs), Jackson played well and Finn Graham had a good first half.

Liam Craig doesn't offer a lot out wide these days, after his performance on Saturday I thought he was an obvious one to rest.  Joe is far better at centre back, his ability on the ball gives us very little in an attacking sense at full back.  I would rest Scobbie (not thru his play, just that Joe is a better centre back) and even try Brad at RB as he can play a pass and likes to get forward.. At least worth a look.

good to see Murray play a full game, he got into it more as the game progressed, Paton did fine in spreading the play and always playing the simple pass, and Coulston looked lively at times.  Looks like Swanson is going to be hugely important for us this season.

Are we officially the worst penalty takers in Scotland?

Roll on Saturday for a massive winner takes all game against The Albion..

If memory serves me right, the last time we played St Johnstone away in a cup tie was that incredible 3-3 draw on a Monday night in 1994 where we were seconds away from a marvellous 3-2 win before Joe McLeod played the Saints forward line onside and they equalised. Great support through from Stirling that night, what a noise we made. Canny see there being too many of us on Saturday, but you never know, tonight's performance may encourage a few more to make the trip.

Stirling Albion have a decent record at McDiarmid. The 3-3 mentioned, a 1-1 the season we won the league and a 2-2 the last time we shared the league. I'd expect Saints to be back to full strength and at home especially that should mean we have enough about us to get a result.

I remember that 3-3, was it Ian Ferguson who got the last minute equaliser?

Looking at the groups, I think it's very unlikely that whoever wins out of Saints and Stirling will be one of the 4 seeded group winners.

Saints currently on 7 points, Stirling on 6.

Rangers are guaranteed with 12 points, Partick are 100% with Queens Park at home to play, Morton are on 8 points with Berwick at home on Saturday.  Alloa are top with 9 points ahead of Raith on 8 and they play each other on Saturday so whoever wins finishes above us. If it's a draw we would need Raith to win the penalties to finish equal with us.  Inverness are same record as Saints and play Arbroath at home on Saturday.

losing that shootout last night might prove quite costly if we do win the group!!
