The respective FAs should not be attempting to contravene the FIFA regulations. They can't pick and choose which rules to obey. What sort of example does that set? Pure hypocrisy.

Absolutely ridiculous decision.  So they go to FIFA to ask if they can do it - perfectly fair - and FIFA tell them they can't - also perfectly fair.

Then they stick two fingers up anyway and decide to do it.  How can there not be penalties in this case?  Doing it without asking FIFA is one thing, but asking, getting told no, then doing it anyway is another altogether.  They'll have to act, otherwise what's to stop everyone else doing the same?  So now there's the possibility that we'll get a points deduction because of this whole circus that surrounds what used to be a dignified occasion.   Fucking hooray.

Do all these people moaning about a potential points deduction think it affects our chances of qualifying in any way?

It certainly doesn't help it.  It might be utterly miniscule, but there's still a chance of the playoffs.  Although it will be the same disappointment, not qualifying because of results is fine.  Throwing completely avoidable points deductions into the mix just for...well, for what really?

Perhaps we could pretend to be going out with poppy armbands on, then at the last minute in the tunnel hide them. The England players will trot out wearing theirs and will get docked 3 points, helping us finish above them. Simples.

There's three layers to this - the rights (or not) of the governing body to set and enforce the rules, the rights (or not) of the individual nation to do something like this regardless of the rules, and the rights (or not) of the individual player to take part when they want to or not be coerced into taking part when they don't want to.

The worst combination as far as I can see is the individual nation going ahead and putting an onus on individuals to take part, with not doing so / doing so risking the reputation of those individuals.

FIFA are right here, keep these politics out of sport.

Those wanting remembrance are also right, but do it on your own time or/and in specially held events. Could even do stuff outside the stadium before the game if need be as a compromise.

Scotland vs England, 13th of November, 1999.  Not a poppy in sight.  Anyone remember any particular outrage about it at the time?  I know it's a couple of days after Armistice Day, but the poppies don't all disappear on the 12th nowadays.  If our game this time round was being played in the 13th, I am certain this would still be being made an issue.
