The Official Former President Trump thread

So Trump’s lawyers are now arguing that the Supreme Court should take, on an expedited basis, his appeal of the decision that he had waited too long to claim Absolute Presidential Immunity in the E. Jean Carroll case. Amusingly, the exactly opposite position they just took before the Supreme Court on Jack Smith’s request to rule on Presidential Immunity in the D.C. case before the D.C. Appeal Court ruled. As it stands, the results could be:

1) The Supreme Court agrees to hear Trump’s expedited appeal in the Carroll case, and then gets a request from Smith to consolidate the case with whichever appeal is filed after the next D.C. ruling (mid-Jan)…meaning Trump actually gave Smith what he wanted because of poor tactics.

2) The Supreme Court declines to hear Trump’s expedited appeal, and the Carroll case moves forward to trial as the Primaries start, with an expectation of Trump being found liable for between tens and hundreds of millions. The same expert that testified in the Giuliani case is testifying in the Carroll case.

Meanwhile, Trump’s team have asked Chutkin to find Smith in Contempt of Court for not respecting the stay she issued, but there is wide disagreement on the matter. Smith’s team has been filing requests and motions that will not be addressed until the hold is lifted (and would be irrelevant if the Supreme Court held him immune), but the Trump teams says it’s an effort to spread political propaganda. Overall, probably will be squashed, as the procedures Smith’s team is following are widely recognised as appropriate. Most observers see this as the Trump team getting another press release about the “peaceful protests” on Jan 6th.

New reports that China and Chinese State controlled companies paid Trump somewhere around $5.5 million during his Presidency as they stayed at his properties. The Commercial Bank of China paid over $7 million for a lease in Trump Tower between 2016 and early 2021…and then broke a five lease year after two years, in 2021 (when Trump left office).

Any American Civil War students out there care to comment?

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/donald-trump-civil-war-negotiated-b2474401.html

In a fairly strong field, this could go down as the worst Trumpet yet...

"Speaking about the 1861-1865 conflict between the Union and the Confederacy, he told the crowd of supporters: “I’m so attracted to seeing it. There was something that could’ve been negotiated… Abraham Lincoln, if he negotiated it, we wouldn’t know who Lincoln was. He wouldn’t have been the Abraham Lincoln. But that would’ve been ok.”

The comments provoked outrage online, with former Republican Rep Liz Cheney writing on X: “Which part of the Civil War ‘could have been negotiated’? The slavery part? The secession part? Whether Lincoln should have preserved the Union?”"

Donnie still going with the “i’m the master negotiator” pish.

That narrative was never true, could have had some merit in 2016, but after four years in government, what exactly did he “negotiate” that benefited the USA?

Picture the scene:

“So, what do you want southern states?”

“We want to have black people as slaves, yankee boy”

“OK, deal!”

He'd have agreed on the understanding that he had to be given one more slave than the next-highest slave owner, in perpetuity.

If you listen to his speech, the portion covering this is disturbing. It’s a rambling mess that is nearly incomprehensible, as he staggers around the central theme and repeats himself a half dozen times within a few minutes. While I was putting reports of cognitive decline up to partisan commentators and wishful thinking, it seems to be very true. His ability to talk ON a subject was always subject to his minuscule attention span, but it’s now become very apparent he’s trapped (mentally) on a hamster wheel of grievance and retaliation. Attempts by interviewers and questioners to get him to comment on topics for the election devolve into whining, name-calling and strange excursions like the Civil War negotiations.

Did you catch the bit about magnets? 😂. The only thing he knows about magnets is completely wrong? Could not make this guy up.

Nobody knows more about owning black people than me.

Some people say I’m the best owner of black people in the country.

And a dozen more 😂

If only there was a well-known meme on the subject of magnets that might be appropriate at this time.

Nope, can't think of one.

“We have a lot of great things in store and a lot of interesting times.  And you’ve been seeing the polls.  The polls have been incredible.  We’ve had some polls with — and I could say “black,” I could say “African American,” or I could say both.  But I’ll tell you what: The polls are at a level that people have never — I don’t think they’ve seen, in terms of Republican.

And I won’t be satisfied until I get 100 percent, because nobody has done more for black people than I have.  Nobody has done more.”

Donald Trump, at a campaign rally in Iowa, talking about the shooting at an Iowa High School that killed a 7th Year student and wounded a number of others, including a principal critically after he placed himself between the shooter and other students:

“It’s a very terrible thing that happened,” Trump said at a campaign event in Iowa on Friday. “And it’s just horrible to see that happening. It’s just horrible. It’s so surprising to see it here, but you have to get over it. You have to move forward. We have to move forward. But to the relatives and all of the people who are so devastated right now to a point they can’t breathe, they can’t live, we are with you all the way.”

Meanwhile, in a democracy far, far away....

"Donald Trump’s campaign refused to sign a loyalty oath when registering for the primary ballot in Illinois for this year’s election that required the candidate to pledge not to call for the overthrow of the US government, The Chicago Sun Times has reported.

Joe Biden and Ron DeSantis have both signed the agreement, which compels candidates to promise they will “not directly or indirectly teach or advocate the overthrow of the government of the United States or of this state or any unlawful change in the form of the governments thereof by force or any unlawful means”."

The State of an Illinois has been trying to delete that oath since the 70’s or so, it’s a relic of the Red Scare, and is not mandatory. So, while this isn’t surprising, it’s kinda a ginned up issue.

It would be if he hadn't signed it in 2016 and 2020 and been charged with what amounts to attempted insurrection.

Listening to Trump’s lawyer actually argue that if the President orders an assassination of a political rival he cannot be criminally charged unless he’s impeached and convicted is horrifying…and scary as f**k!
