As I said to your esteemed colleague KT earlier in the thread.

Enjoy it while it lasts.........

It will be all the sweeter for us, when our roles are reversed.;)

Spittal and Robertson were from Queens Park. Stuart Armstrong came through at Inverness after Dyce Boys Club. GMS signed for united at age 21 from Airdrie. So you’ve brought through Gauld and who else?

Sort of agree with this. Ian Cathro got a bit lucky off the back of this too, right place right time.

Yes because these players had absolutely no development while at United.

None.

None whatsoever.

Absolutely; I would say that's the 6 years that Armstrong spent at United (starting as a youth) had probably more effect than 1 year at ICT.

We took GMS from Airdire and turned him into a player (who loved a goal against the Dees) that ended up at Celtic, Robertson, from part time football, who was playing for Scotland within a year and ended up in the Premiership, Ciftci, who nobody had ever heard of before and sold him for 1.5m within a couple of years, Harry Souttar who ended up at Stoke.... (on top of Gauld which is the one you have given us).

My point is that the development team at United thought they had found the formula to turn average footballers into superstars over a very short space of time, and this was found out as the new boys such as Telfer, Connolly, Spittal and Fraser were epic fails in this department, as too much pressure was put on them too young, and way before they were equipped to deal with it,

Is that how it works is it? Sign a player from the lower leagues and then say you developed them?

Yes. That is definitely how it works. After all these players showed no improvement whatsoever from when they joined us to when they left.

Not an iota of improvement.

None

I would say that Dundee United went through a period of time where they were able to take players from lower leagues and help them to realise their full potential.

Whether you wish to be pedantic or not and say that this does not count as developing them (simply because we didn't have them from when they were 5) is up to you.

Main point (again) is that lots of very young and relatively unknown players joined United (or came through the youth set up) during that period, and went on to do very well.

Hope that clears this up...... ;)

According to those at the club it was McNamara who gave the all clear for the sale of Armstrong and GMS. Thompson had said to Jackie that with the club heading for another top six finish and potential cup revenue that losing both players at the end of the season for less would be offset with that revenue. Jackie said he had ready made replacements for both players and said he’d be able to cope with their loss. His contract probably helped make that decision given his commission on player sales. As much as Thompson gets the blame for those two leaving when they did it was apparently McNamara who had the final say.

That’s definitely the trouble with the type of contract McNamara was on.   The motive for a big money sale of any player will always be an issue.

Do you think Thompson just put too much faith in McNamara’s opinion or do you think Thompson was blinded by the size of the transfer fee?

Apparently it is fairly common practice down in England but that type of contract doesn’t sit right with me. Personally I think the problem was that Thompson gave McNamara the same freedom Levein had which backfired big time once the honeymoon period was over and Jackie had turned the place into a shambles behind the scenes.

Did we ever find out what happened with Steve Campbell? Such a tumultuous time for United the late McNamara era.

"The ex-youth director was suspended by United in August pending an investigation amid talk of a fall-out with ex-boss Jackie McNamara.

But now Record Sport understands United were looking into several complaints of bullying and use of racist language regarding youth team players."

This is the record so take it with a pinch of salt but if this is true fucking hell

One common story doing the rounds at the time was a fight at the youth digs and that of the players involved one was part of Darren Jackson's agency. Campbell took the side of other player (or players) and the three amigos all hounded Campbell as a result. Not sure the story is exactly as it sounds but it did all seem to hit a flat point with some kind of bust up in the youth accommodation.

Gms had already spent a fair amount of time down in England beforehand had he not? His time at Airdrie was always a stepping stone to a bigger club, you didn't turn him into anything.
